SOLO TEENAGE CIRCUMNAVIGATOR LAURA DEKKER SET TO COMPLETE JOURNEY IN ST. MAARTEN WITHIN DAYS
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten (Jan. 19, 2012) – The St. Maarten Tourist Bureau (www.VacationStMaarten.com) and The Daily Herald (www.thedailyherald.com) have announced that solo teenage circumnavigator Laura Dekker is approaching St. Maarten and was located at 13.00N and 53.00W as of 11:00 am Tuesday, with 600 miles remaining before completing her year-long, around-the-world journey, as reported by the St. Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC).

The 16-year-old’s average speed has been 7.1 knots per hour (170 miles per day) over the last few days, which is very fast for a 38-foot boat. The wind died down over the last 24 hours and the sea became friendlier. After a few days of experiencing water coming over-deck, Dekker now enjoys sitting in the cockpit in a moderate breeze. The St. Maarten Yacht Club had the following interview with Dekker (LD) on Tuesday morning (interview taken from The Daily Herald, the St. Maarten local daily newspaper):

LAURA DEKKER

SMYC: “How is the weather forecast for the coming days?”

LD: “The weather forecast for the coming days looks promising and I expect to maintain at least 140 miles per 24 hours for the next days.”

SMYC: “You have chosen to complete your circumnavigation in St. Maarten. Why?”

LD: “I had a very good time in St. Maarten last year and for me it’s a logical choice to complete my voyage.”

SMYC: “So you have good memories of St. Maarten?”

LD: “Yes.”

SMYC: “You’re now about six weeks at sea. Do you feel lonely?”

LD: “I never feel lonely at all.”

SMYC: “What will be the first thing you do when you step on land again?”

LD: “Normally I start cleaning up the mess aboard, while at sea I can’t do so. I would love to take a warm shower and fresh food. But I think this time everything will be different, I assume.”

In St. Maarten, a team is preparing to welcome Dekker and her boat, the 38-foot Jeanneau Ginfizz ketch “Guppy.” The St. Maarten Yacht Club, the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA), the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau are all working together to celebrate Dekker’s return.

Dekker will tie-up Guppy at the dock at the St. Maarten Yacht Club from where she started her solo circumnavigation almost exactly a year ago. She will have a slip at the Simpson Bay Marina compliments of Island Global Yachting (IGY) while she stays in St. Maarten. IGY also donated a slip while she was in St. Maarten before.

Dekker’s parents, grandparents and sister will be present to welcome her when she docks Guppy at the St. Maarten Yacht Club. Royal Palm Beach Resort has given a complimentary suite to the family for their stay in St. Maarten.

British PM stokes war of words over Falklands

British PM stokes war of words over Falklands
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

By Alice Ritchie (AFP) – 9 hours ago

LONDON — Prime Minister David Cameron accused Argentina of “colonialism” towards the Falklands and warned Britain was ready to defend them, stoking tensions over the islands 30 years after they sparked a war.
Speaking to the House of Commons on Wednesday, Cameron condemned Argentina’s increasingly strong rhetoric over the British-held South Atlantic archipelago, which Buenos Aires claims as its own.
He revealed that Britain’s National Security Council had met on Tuesday to review its military plans for the islands, saying he was “determined we should make sure that our defences and everything else is in order”.
“The key point is we support the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination,” Cameron told lawmakers, referring to the 3,000 residents of the remote territory.

“What the Argentinians have been saying recently, I would argue, is actually far more like colonialism because these people want to remain British and the Argentinians want them to do something else.”
His comments sparked a furious response in Argentina, with Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo telling reporters they were “totally offensive, especially coming from Great Britain”.
Foreign Minister Hector Timerman added that “obviously at a time when there are only remnants of colonialism, Great Britain, in an imperial decline, decides to rewrite history”, in remarks to the official Telam news agency.
The heated exchange was the latest in a long dispute over the Falklands, internally self-governing islands located 400 nautical miles from Argentina.

They have been held by Britain since 1833 but are still claimed by Argentina, where they are known as the Malvinas, despite its defeat in the 74-day war fought between the two countries in 1982.
Tensions began rising in 2010, when London authorised oil prospecting around the islands, and have spiralled in recent weeks as Argentina’s neighbours joined the dispute.

In December, South American trading bloc Mercosur agreed to close its ports to ships flying the Falklands flag.
And during British Foreign Secretary William Hague’s first official visit to Brazil on Wednesday, his counterpart, Antonio Patriota, made clear that all Latin American nations backed Argentina’s claim.

The imminent deployment to the Falklands of Prince William, the second in line to the British throne who works as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force (RAF), is unlikely to calm the waters.
Although the RAF insists his six-week visit is a routine mission, Argentina has said it is a “provocative act”.
The National Security Council meeting was sparked by the 30th anniversary of Argentina’s invasion of the Falklands in April, a government spokeswoman said, and concluded that “we have the right strategy in place” to defend the islands.
But concerns have been raised that Britain’s military would struggle to defend the islands from another Argentine attack following deep cuts in its defence budget.
Admiral Sandy Woodward, the commander of the naval task force that took back the islands in 1982, warned last year that the lack of an aircraft carrier and weakening US support for British sovereignty left them close to indefensible.

Peru court sentences Van der Sloot to 28 years

Peru court sentences Van der Sloot to 28 years
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Joran van der Sloot knew his guilty plea in the strangulation death of a young woman he met at a Lima casino was a big gamble as he tried to get a reduced sentence. On Friday, the poker-loving Dutchman lost.

A three-judge panel sentenced him to 28 years in prison, discarding his claims of contrition in a killing his lawyer said was triggered by trauma from being the prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway.

Joran van der Sloot arrives to the courtroom for his sentence at San Pedro prison in Lima, Peru, Friday Jan. 13, 2012. Van der Sloot will be sentenced Friday for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores, a young woman he met at a Lima casino. Prosecutors have asked for a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft. (AP Photo/Karel Navarro)

Asked if he accepted the sentence, Van der Sloot, standing in a green T-shirt and faded jeans in a hot Lima courtroom, said he would appeal.
The sentencing marked the latest chapter in the tabloid-sustaining saga and came a day after a judge in Alabama declared Holloway legally dead as her parents try to bring Van der Sloot, 24, to the U.S. for a related crime.
“I believe he is beyond rehabilitation,” Dave Holloway in Birmingham, Ala., after that hearing.
The Peruvian judges said Friday that due to time already served, van der Sloot’s sentence would end in June 2038.

While the parents of Holloway and Flores want him to experience the greater deprivation of a U.S. prison, they will have to wait for him to serve his time before any extradition on U.S. charges related to his alleged extortion of Holloway’s mother, a Peruvian legal expert said.
Late Friday, prison authorities told the AP that Van der Sloot had been transferred to the high-security Piedras Gordas prison in northern Lima in response to reports that he had enjoyed privileges like television, internet access and a cell phone in Castro Castro prison. Piedras Gordas holds local crime bosses and terrorism convicts, including Shining Path guerrillas.

“He will be in an individual cell at Piedras Gordas to give authorities greater control of him and cut off some of the facilities he has had in Castro Castro,” said prison service spokeswoman Janeth Sanchez.
Earlier Friday, the three female judges showed no sign of believing his contrition for the May 2010 killing of Stephany Flores. Their sentence, which took a clerk nearly two hours to read as Van der Sloot repeatedly wiped sweat from his brow, said he was guilty of “first-degree murder with aggravating factors of ferocity and great cruelty.”

Van der Sloot stood passively as the clerk detailed how he elbowed Flores, a 21-year-old business student, in the face, beat her repeatedly, then strangled her with his bloodied shirt.
Van der Sloot’s expression didn’t change when the sentence was rendered, including the judges’ order to pay $75,000 in reparations to the victim’s family. No members of Van der Sloot’s family attended the trial.

It is the first sentence ever imposed on Van der Sloot despite repeated efforts to prove he was involved in Holloway’s apparent death on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba where he grew up. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with him.

The Peruvian victim’s father, Ricardo Flores, complained after the sentencing that Van der Sloot was living well in a Lima prison, where he has been segregated from the general population.
“A jail isn’t a five-star hotel,” Ricardo Flores told reporters. “Since the first day, we’ve been complaining about the excessive privileges” Van der Sloot allegedly enjoyed in jail.
Unconfirmed news reports, denied by penal authorities, say Van der Sloot has had a cell phone, television, a video gaming console and Internet access in his cell. A Peruvian TV station published a photo Friday it says was taken by Van der Sloot himself of his prison cell that shows a 42-inch LCD television, a Blu-ray player and an Internet modem.
Flores said that “everything they showed on the TV has been proven” but that he would not have documentation of it to present to the news media until Monday.
Van der Sloot’s attorney, Jose Jimenez, said he is not familiar with his client’s prison cell.
As in many developing nations, foreigners with money can buy superior treatment in Peru’s prisons, including decent food, while the vast majority of inmates suffer overcrowding and constant peril from criminal gangs.
Under Peru’s penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half the sentence with good behavior, including work and study. The judges specified that Van der Sloot, as a foreigner, be expelled from Peru after serving his sentence.
Peruvian criminal law expert Luis Lamas said Peru’s legal code specifies that Van der Sloot serve his time before he can be extradited.
But Ken Randall, dean of University of Alabama law school, said he believes Peru’s extradition treaty with the United States would allow for Van der Sloot to be extradited to the U.S. to stand trial on the extortion and fraud charges before his sentence ends.
“In this extraordinary case of Natalee Holloway, Peru would be well advised to do so,” he said.
There is no indication U.S. officials have moved to seek to extradite Van der Sloot.
Van der Sloot was indicted on those charges in Alabama the same day he was arrested for the Flores murder. He is accused of accepting $25,000 in return for a promise to lead a lawyer for Holloway’s mother to her daughter’s remains.
Van der Sloot didn’t deliver on the offer, and U.S. authorities say he may have used some of the money to fly to Peru two weeks before the Flores murder. After killing the Lima woman, he took nearly $300 in cash from Flores as well as credit cards, and was captured four days later in Chile.
Van der Sloot told police he flew into a rage when she discovered his connection to Holloway while they were playing online poker in his hotel room. He had received an instant message from someone about the case.
Police forensic experts disputed that story, and the judges who sentenced him noted that Van der Sloot later recanted the confession, claiming it was exacted under duress and without an official translator. The victim’s family contends Van der Sloot killed Flores so he could rob her.
The imposing young man raised on a tourist island has been a staple of tabloids and true crime TV, as well as the subject of several books about Holloway.
The 18-year-old from a wealthy Birmingham suburb disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip. Her body was never found and repeated searches turned up nothing even as the case garnered worldwide attention.

Van der Sloot said he was involved in her disappearance in a videotape clandestinely made by a Dutch journalist. He later denied it, however, and has told several interviewers that he is a pathological liar. A homicide investigation into her death remains open in Aruba though there has been no recent activity, officials said.
Associated Press Writers Martin Villena, Carla Salazar and Franklin Briceno contributed to this report.

ANJET Establishes ANJET ASIA in Hong Kong to Service Growing Private Jet Market in Region – Company to Begin Offering Exotic Travel Packages in 2012
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

In response to the rising demand for private aviation services in the Asian market, Westlake Village, Calif.-based private jet charter company ANJET has just opened new offices in the region to complement its U.S.-based operations. Based in the thriving area of Central Hong Kong, ANJET ASIA will cater to the private aviation needs of clients in Hong Kong, mainland China, South Korea, Singapore, India, the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding areas. All Hong Kong-based representatives of ANJET ASIA are fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. The announcement was made today by ANJET ASIA President and CEO, Anthony Newcombe.

“Being a longtime shipping, business and shopping gateway to and from Asia, Hong Kong was a natural selection and ideal setting to designate as the flagship location around which we can build and service clients in this market,” said Newcombe. “As air space regulations ease up and the business jet concept gains momentum throughout mainland China, the Hong Kong office also eases the introduction to and development of services for this unique and flourishing marketplace.”
According to industry reports, the private jet market in this region is expected to rise 16 percent this year, with the growing number of Asia’s wealthy individuals expected to travel by private jet, chartered or owned. Aside from the growing demand for business jets, changes in government policies and attitudes in China have encouraged the industry to develop further, while recent improvements in infrastructure have also given business jet manufacturers, operators and charter companies more reasons to be optimistic. ANJET ASIA is carefully developing a select group of private jet “concierges” in the region to provide the highly-personalized level of service to which ANJET’s clients have become accustomed. ANJET ASIA’s goal is to take this service concept to a new level by introducing creative new concepts in its dealings with both business executives and wealthy leisure clientele.

In addition to the opening of the Hong Kong office, ANJET ASIA will begin offering exotic travel packages to its discerning clientele in 2012. Designated as “hot spots” or “exclusive hideaways,” the travel packages will provide a welcome relief from the daily grind of everyday “life,” or will simply be a unique, luxurious and unforgettable experience. A few examples include: the Serenity Package, an 8-day/7-night jaunt departing from Hong Kong to Thailand with a stop in Bali, Indonesia, or the Paradise Package which includes stops along the Fiji Island chain. The client will be able to tailor the trips to fit any party size (usually averaging between 10-20); designate the number of stops and selected locale(s); and the number of days they travel. Most trips would originate in Hong Kong, but could also originate from Singapore and other convenient surrounding areas. In the coming months, ANJET will also begin offering similar types of packages for destinations in the U.S., Caribbean and other global “hot spots.”

As a private jet charter company, ANJET is committed to providing its clients with the highest level of personalized service, quality aircraft, and most competitive pricing in the industry. ANJET recognizes the importance and value of time for all business professionals and works to provide quick and effective transportation for these busy individuals, eliminating the headaches and hassles associated with commercial travel.

Sean Penn to Be Honored for Haiti Relief by Critics Choice Movie Awards
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Sean Penn has won another award for his charity work rather than his acting, as the Broadcast Film Critics Association announced on Monday that Penn will receive the 2012 Joel Siegel Award at the 17th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards on Thursday, January 12.

Last January, Penn was given the Stanley Kramer Award by the Producers Guild of America for his charitable work.

This will be the fifth time the BFCA has presented the Joel Siegel Award, which is handed out, in the words of the BFCA release, “to those who understand, as Joel did, that the greatest value of celebrity is as an enhanced platform to do good works for others.”

George Clooney will present the award to Penn, who is being singled out for founding the J/P Haitian Relief organization in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, two years to the day before this year’s CCMA.

“While it was heartening to see such an outpouring of support and aid for the Haitian people in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the long-term commitment made by Sean and his organization is particularly notable,” said BFCA president Joey Berlin in a release announcing the award.

Penn has previously won Critics Choice Movie Awards for his acting in “Mystic River” and “Milk,” and been nominated five additional times.

The Critics Choice Movie Awards will take place at the Hollywood Palladium and will air live on VH1.

Penn’s honor was not the only awards-related announcement to be made in the last day. The Motion Picture Sound Editors also announced the recipient of its annual lifetime achievement award, which will be handed out at its Golden Reel Awards ceremony on February 19.

George Watters II, a veteran sound editor who has won two Oscars and been nominated eight times, has been named recipient of the 2012 MPSE Career Achievement Award. His Oscars came for “The Hunt for Red October” and “Pearl Harbor,” and his other work includes “Top Gun,” “Armageddon” and “The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

And in a third awards-show-related announcement, the screen Actors Guild said that Fiji Water will serve as the official water of the 18th SAG Awards.
