A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard. 1944. As the war in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options – including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country – and the fate of the free world.

Jamaica’s prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has vow to loosen the grip of “colonial ties to Britain. The newly elected Prime Minister has remain adamant in Jamaica becoming a Republic following in the steps of Guyuana and Trinidad. Citing the colonial era ties to the UK Legal Systems, Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller stated that “judges in Westminster should not be final arbiters on Jamaican court cases”.

On 29 December the 66-year-old led her centre-left People’s National Party (PNP) to a landslide win over the centre-right Jamaica Labour Party, winning 42 of 63 seats. The enormously popular Simpson-Miller has the control to change the constitution of Jamaica and introduce a referendum to transform Jamaica into a Republic.

Laurence Allen, a Jamaican analyst with IHS Global Insight, said: “There is no clear view which way the Jamaican population would vote. It [a referendum] would be a bit of a gamble.

“There is broad sympathy for Jamaica being in full control of its constitutional arrangements and government. But balanced against this is wide and popular respect for the current Queen.”

Additionally, Jamaica has more urgent problems to deal with: high unemployment, a massive debt to GDP ratio of 130%, and a substantial dependence on tourism from the crisis-hit US, Allen said. The island is also a victim of geography, stuck midway between drug-producing countries in the Andes and drug consumers in North America.

“There are so many challenges. It [reform] could well slip down the priority list fairly quickly,” Allen predicted, adding that a referendum was unlikely before 2014/15, somewhere towards the end of the government’s five-year term.

In her acceptance speech Simpson Miller said her government would “ease the burdens and pressures” of sinking living standards and rising poverty, and would pursue a tight fiscal policy while co-operating with the IMF and striving to “balance the books and people’s lives”. Urging reconciliation she said: “We will seek to make this country one of brothers and sisters, not of rivals and victims.”

R. Kelly Joins Trend of Musicians Hosting Caribbean Cruises

Batten down the chocolate factory and stay off the poop deck! R. Kelly’s wonderful retro-soul album Love Letter is about to be a Caribbean cruise! The five-day “Romantic ‘Love Letter Cruise’” sets sail October 1, 2012, departing form Miami with stops at Grand Turks, Half Moon Cay, and Nassua, Bahamas. It isn’t cheap — is love ever cheap? However, cruise participants who book before December 17 will save $250. Kells will be on hand to perform, and those on board the ship can take a stepping class, participate in a “12 Play” basketball game or (we assume) do a quick run through of “Trapped in the Buffet.”

Love Letter is Kelly’s brilliant stab at the soulful ’50s and ’60s revival that has been popping up everywhere recently from Raphael Saadiq and Mayer Hawthorne to Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You,” Lloyd’s “Dedication to My Ex,” and the Kanye West/Jay-Z merger “Otis.” Kelly nearly outstrips them all, adding his own considerable songwriting chops, impeccable vocal stylings, and wacky postmodern sensibility. But the album came out far too late to receive any real consideration for 2010 year-end lists, and it definitely came out far too late last year to receive any real consideration this time around.

Which is a real shame: It opens with a madrigal! It involves taxi-cab sex and self-referential hits! There’s a Christmas remix! (Also, “Radio Message” and “When a Woman Loves” are sumptuously catchy pop throwbacks that could share a double A-sided single with Beyoncé’s “Love on Top.”)

Kelly isn’t the first pop star to host his own cruise. John Mayer donned his mankini for the inaugural Mayercraft Carrier cruise in 2008, while Taylor Swift’s first cruise took to the high seas in January. SPIN even took a wild ride on the KISS cruise and we’re still getting fake blood out of our sailor suits. Neither can be quite as seductive as Kells, though, so as critic Dave Moore warns, “Mothers hide your daughters!”

Below, enjoy the Christmas remix of R. Kelly’s Love Letter title track:
