Models walked into the room wearing high-end designs, ushering the start of what is expected to be a feast of exciting fashion at Styleweek Jamaica, which will be held next weekend.

On Friday, the models strutted into the ballroom at the Wyndham Kingston hotel (formerly Hilton Kingston), in New Kingston, to music being played by a group of drummers.

The male and female models walked in and struck their poses while Saint International boss Deiwght Peters spoke.

Peters announced partnerships with Jampro and the Heart Trust/NTA. He said Saint International would be working with the students from the Heart Trust/ NTA, who will be in seminars with local and overseas designers. Peters also announced that there would be two international buying consultants at this year’s event.

Claude Duncan, vice-president of investment and promotions at Jampro, commended Saint International for aiding in the development and promotion of the Jamaican fashion industry.

“Styleweek has done much to show the Jamaican talent that exists,” he said, noting that the event exposed old and new designers.

He said he was pleased that an event like Styleweek could occur while the country was still in a state of emergency, as “it says to the world that Kingston is back to business”. He also noted that Jamaica lost more than US$1 million as a result of the unrest in Kingston.

Sidney Bartley, from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, was also pleased to be part of the launch, saying he believed it was helping to promote brand Jamaica. He said he was proud of Saint International because the company had helped to discover many ordinary Jamaicans.

“Many of his models come from grass-roots where the culture was created,” he said of Peters and his 10-year-old company.

After strutting earlier and striking poses around the room, the models took the stage to more drumming. This time, the audience got the opportunity to really see the pieces from old and new designers like Drenz Fashions, Shenell Francis, Les Campbell, Elan, Neah-Lis, HOD and Spokes Apparel. Peters also used the opportunity to show off some of the more established models that had come out of his agency and were now representing the country in many parts of the world.

Styleweek Jamaica will kick off on July 9 with the International Men’s Collection on the South Lawn of Devon House.

The International Mecca Of Style will be held at Fort Charles, Port Royal, on July 10, while Fashionblock will be held on Knutsford Boulevard on July 11.

South African government spent more than $110 Million (BDS $28.2 Million) on World Cup Expenses

JOHANNESBURG – Government agencies in South Africa have spent more than 110 million rand (BDS$28.2 million) on World Cup tickets and related expenses, more than double the amount they had publicly admitted to spending, according to a newspaper report.

Eskom, the national power utility, spent about 12 million rand (BDS$3 million) on football tickets for the tournament despite the threat of a strike from workers unhappy with their wages and housing allowances.

“They spent 17 000 rand (BDS$4 400) per executive FIFA ticket,” one employee who works in the finance department and has knowledge of the expenditures told the Associated Press.

Managers

“The workers are incredibly emotional about managers getting enormous wage increases and housing allowances while they are seeing little of these benefits.”

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because employees are not allowed to speak to the media.

Although the strike was averted yesterday, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which represents about 16 000 of the Eskom staff, said employees were still upset with the amount of money spent on tickets.

“Only the executives and their wives and their children received tickets,” NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka told the Sunday Times.

Seshoka said Eskom workers would get a nine per cent wage increase and a 1 500 rand (BDS$380) minimum housing allowance for all employees.

“We will be taking up these two issues with Eskom to ensure that the workers are treated fairly in the future,” Seshoka said.

South African Airways (SAA) is the biggest spender on World Cup tickets, spending 23 million rand (BDS$5.90 million), according to the Sunday Times report.

The national airline bought 1 749 tickets only two months before receiving a 1.6 billion rand (BDS$4 billion) government bailout in December 2008.

Selfish

Also, PetroSA and Transnet spent a combined 24 million rand (BDS$6.2 million), and the Free State provincial government and the Mangaung municipality spent almost 22 million rand (BDS$5.6 million).

According to the report, the total of 111.4 million rand (BDS$28.6 million) could increase as more figures are released.

“It’s the most selfish way of spending money and it is recklessness of the worst kind,” said Zwelinzima Vavi, the general secretary of South Africa’s biggest trade union federation, COSATU.

“SAA is hardly recovering from disastrous years of bailouts from government. I don’t think they are out of the woods yet, but they have the audacity to buy tickets.”

Hospitality

SAA spokesman Fani Zulu said the airline gave out 1 633 tickets to tour operators, used another 20 tickets for staff, donated 28 to needy children and gave SAA sales teams and executives a further 68.

“SAA also used the hospitality packages to enhance its brand value, especially among tour operators, to enhance sales of flight tickets during the tournament,” Zulu said.

Last month, the National Health and Allied Workers Union said that state entities, such as national broadcaster SABC, the South African Post Office and other government departments, should pay back more than 10 million rand (BDS$2.6 million) spent on World Cup tickets. (AP)

World markets mixed as global economic recovery as investor express wariness

LONDON (CNNMoney.com) — World markets were mixed Monday, as investors continued to express wariness over the global economic recovery. European shares struggled in the early going and most stocks in Asia finished the session lower.

Investors were cautious as they digested the latest U.S. employment report, released Friday, which painted a grim picture of the job market.

Europe: Major European indexes rose at the open on Monday, but then lost ground. Britain’s FTSE 100 traded choppily for much of the day and edged narrowly higher in afternoon trading, as did the CAC 40 in France and Germany’s DAX.

Shares of BP (BP) rose 2% in London after Britain’s Sunday Times reported that the company is seeking strategic investors to fight a potential takeover following the Gulf oil spill, which so far has cost the company $3.12 billion.

Asia: In Asia, markets finished mixed. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei rose 0.7%, but elsewhere in the region stocks slumped. The Shanghai Composite tumbled 0.8% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong fell 0.3%.

Stocks around the world have been volatile for the last two month amid concerns about Europe’s debt woes, slowing growth in China and the prospect a double-dip recession in the United States.

Jobs: U.S. stocks fell to their lowest level of 2010 on Friday after the weaker-than-expected jobs report showed that employers cut 125,000 jobs in June.
0:00 /0:51Krugman: Stimulus is not enough

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast an overall loss of about 100,000 jobs. The decline was mostly due to steep layoffs of temporary census workers.

Dollar: The dollar was higher against other major currencies. It gained against the euro and the British pound and was a shade higher versus the Japanese yen. To top of page

India’s snub of John Howard clearly goes against the spirit of the game.

India’s snub of John Howard clearly goes against the spirit of the game.

By ANDREW SHEARER John Howard’s stymied bid for the leadership of the International Cricket Council is creating bad feelings in Australia because the decision so clearly goes against the spirit of the game, which emphasizes fair play. Indeed it’s hard not to conclude that it was Mr. Howard’s seriousness as a candidate that was anathema to cricket officials in a handful of countries—seemingly including India—who are all too comfortable with business as usual at the ICC. The rest simply went along for the ride. If ever there was an organization in need of a shake-up, surely it is the International Cricket Council. And John Howard has exactly the right mix of management and reform credentials, high-level diplomatic experience and familiarity with the game to achieve that.

But let’s leave the merits of Mr. Howard’s ICC nomination to one side. Much of that debate goes back to the distant past in any case. What has been missing from the discussion—and deserves acknowledgment—is the more recent reality of Mr. Howard’s significant contribution to Australia-India relations. Attacks in the Indian media on the former prime minister, who is also my former boss, are as misguided as the role played by Indian cricket authorities in blocking his nomination.

For all the Australian Labor government’s talk of “taking relations to a new level,” it was Prime Minister Howard who was prepared to take on the non-proliferation orthodoxy and overturn decades of Australian foreign policy by lifting the ban on uranium exports to India. He did this not to win votes or to please Australian uranium exporters but because he saw clearly India’s burgeoning strategic importance, economic potential and legitimate desire for international recognition. He also recognized New Delhi’s strong nonproliferation record.

When former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was swept to office in 2007, however, he reversed the change. Despite enjoying enormous popular support and political authority in the days following his election, Mr. Rudd was not prepared to take on the Australian Labor Party’s antinuclear ideologues—in retrospect a harbinger of his weakness within his own party. We will have to wait and see whether his successor, Julia Gillard, is prepared to take on her own Left faction over uranium. Don’t count on it though.

Mr. Howard recognized that Australia and India share not only growing economic and strategic interests but also fundamental values and traditions. They are two of the oldest continuous democracies in the Indo-Pacific region as well as growing trade partners and the geostrategic “bookends” of the increasingly important Indian Ocean. The prime minister saw that together these factors made a compelling case for both countries to take each other much more seriously than they had in the past.

Mr. Howard developed a close and warm personal relationship with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh—presumably attracted by his no-nonsense leadership style, political skills and abiding commitment to economic reform. He often publicly highlighted the far-reaching economic reforms Mr. Singh launched as finance minister. He was a consistent advocate of the benefits that would flow to the international community from India’s rise and of the durability of its institutions. Ironically, in light of the media barrage directed at his ICC candidacy, these include an outspoken free press.

It was under Mr. Howard’s government that work commenced on bilateral free trade negotiations between India and Australia. It was Mr. Howard who entertained the proposal for a Quadrilateral Dialogue that would have brought Australia and India together with the United States and Japan, in the face of Chinese displeasure. The Rudd government subsequently publicly disowned the initiative, in a blatant kowtow to pressure from Beijing.

It was also Mr. Howard who in 2007 lobbied, albeit unsuccessfully, for India’s inclusion in APEC, the region’s leading regional institution. I know because I was there when he pressed India’s case firmly with President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the face of American resistance.

Mr. Howard’s diplomacy may not have been flamboyant or flawless. But it was principled and consistent, and it got results. He understood India’s growing importance and was serious about building a strategic relationship with New Delhi. Australia-India relations were better under Mr. Howard’s leadership than they had been before, and certainly better than they are now. His efforts to build a stronger friendship between Australia and India deserve better.

Letter to the editor: Guyana: Dawn of a new era or Dawn of the living dead??

Letter to the editor: Guyana: Dawn of a new era or Dawn of the living dead??

| 05/07/2010 | 0 Comments
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Dear Editor,

I grew up in a political family with different party affiliations.

My father was a member of the PPP, and my brother a WPA activist. There were political arguments, of course, sometimes heated, but at the end of the day, democracy prevailed, at least under one roof. I once joked that we shall drink from the Cup, whilst sitting under Palm tree, ringing the Bell!

Differences aside, I think country, not self, was behind the struggle for free and fair elections.

On the stairs leading to the second floor hung a scroll with the words “Walter Lives, this act in itself will not delay their day of judgment”, along with a picture of Walter Rodney, a man I was too young to remember. Had I been old enough, I probably would have been influenced by his vision for a new Guyana

At exactly 7:50 am everyday, Dr Jagan’s car would pull up to our gate to take my father to work and myself to school. I remember Dr. Jagan asking me about my homework almost everyday. I had a tremendous amount of respect for that man; his simplicity, humility and pleasant personality.

I voted PPP in ‘92 to help bring an end to PNC rule, largely because of my father’s dedication to his country, and again in ’97, this time to extend their time in office.

At a young age, I walked the halls of Freedom House not quite understanding politics or its implications on my life.

Under PNC rule, I also remember the police showing up in the middle of the night to search for “anti- government material”, in this instance WPA material. We all sat there, bleary eyed, while they literally ransacked the house. My father followed their every step, never letting them out of his sight, and when they were finished, they would say “thank you Mr. Westmaas, we haven’t found anything”, and my father’s terse reply would be: “and I hope you haven’t left anything either”.

The point of this letter is to ask a few questions; Are we witnessing history repeating itself?

Where is the “Dawn of a new era” that I voted for in 92 and 97?

The word “people” is used in almost all the party slogans, yet the people hardly have a voice.

Will I live to see a new Guyana, with leaders who have a vision for all Guyanese?

How about electing (not selecting) a female candidate?

Can we reduce the term limit for the president to four years?

Yuri Westmaas

Travel Agents name Sandals among their favorites at 11th Annual Agents Choice Awards

TRAVEL agents across Canada named Sandals and Beaches Resorts as their “favourites” at the 11th annual Agents’ Choice Awards. With more agents voting this year than ever before, the Caribbean’s leading hotel chain emerged as the top pick in three prominent categories.

Close to 4,000 Canadian travel agents from across the country, voting in 23 industry categories representing the largest sampling of Canadian travel agent opinions ever, chose Sandals as their ‘Favourite All-Inclusive’ for 11 years in a row; ‘Favourite Hotel Chain’ for the fourth consecutive year; and ‘Favourite Environmentally Friendly Company’ for the third year running.

“Winning these awards by such wide margins really shows that for the best vacation there can never be too much luxury, service and quality,” said Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, founder and chairman of Caribbean-based Sandals Resorts International.

“Our philosophy of providing guests far more than is expected wins hands down every time, and we could not be more proud. This is an amazing honour,” added Stewart, who never seems to tire of receiving some of the world’s top tourism awards.

Sandals Resorts won the ‘Favourite All-Inclusive’ category with an overwhelming 7,563 points; 5,226 points ahead of its closest runners. In addition, Canadian agents confirmed that the Sandals chain is viewed not only as an all-inclusive company, but as one of the world’s leading hotel brands by choosing Sandals as their ‘Favourite Hotel Chain’, with 5,721 points.

The nearest competitor, Fairmont Hotels, scored 1,770 points. Other contenders in the category for ‘Favourite Hotel Chain’ included the Four Seasons, Marriott and Hilton. Agents also selected Sandals for its environmental, educational and community outreach throughout the Caribbean region by choosing Sandals as ‘Favourite Environmentally Friendly Company’ for three years running with a total of 5,013 points.

The Agents’ Choice Awards were launched in 2000 by leading travel trade publishers Toronto-based Baxter Travel Media and its flagship publications Canadian Travel Press and Travel Courier. Travel agents are asked to select their top three favourite travel suppliers in various categories with their votes weighted accordingly — three points for a first place vote, two for second and one for third.

Dunga fired as Brazil coach, he will not be around for 2014 World Cup

Dunga fired as Brazil coach, he will not be around for 2014 World Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil coach Dunga and all of his technical staff have been dismissed after the side’s quarterfinal exit from the World Cup, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) announced yesterday.

The decision was widely expected after Brazil were beaten 2-1 by the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Friday. The team took a 1-0 lead through Robinho in the first half, but went on to concede two goals and have a man sent off in a dismal second half performance in Port Elizabeth.

“With the closing of the work cycle that started in August 2006 and ended with the elimination of Brazil from the World Cup in South Africa, the CBF announces the dismissal of the Technical Commission of the Brazilian team,” the federation said in a statement.

It added that a new coach will be appointed before the end of the month.

Local media tipped Mano Menezes, former Brazil player and AC Milan coach Leonardo, and Wanderley Luxemburgo as potential successors to Dunga.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, who coached Brazil to their fifth World Cup title in 2002, had previously been tipped for a return but has since said he is not available due to his commitments with Brazilian club Palmeiras.

Whoever is chosen, the new coach and his staff are likely to face a couple of friendly matches in the next few months and then the South American championship — the Copa America — in 2011 in Argentina.

Dunga returned to Brazil with the team early yesterday and was met with applause and cheering by fans in his native Porto Alegre in southern Brazil.

Brazil will host the World Cup in 2014 for the first time since 1950.

Florida release “Oil Spill” update for July 4, 2010

Florida release “Oil Spill” update for July 4, 2010

| 05/07/2010 | 1 Comment
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

The wind and wave conditions will push the near shore oil plume westward and NOAA is forecasting no direct impacts along Florida’s coastline through Tuesday.

Moderate east winds of 10-15 knots will persist across the Northern Gulf Coast today and will continue through Tuesday. Near shore waves will be onshore, out of the southeast, at 2-3 feet through the next 3 days.

A 60% chance of rain offshore will hamper surface recovery operations today and tomorrow. Offshore, no significant amounts of oil are within or moving towards Eddy Franklin and there is no clear path for oil to enter the Florida Straits.

On July 3 the total amount of oil recovered was approximately 25,195 barrels: 17,020 barrels of oil were collected, 8,175 barrels of oil were flared and 57 million cubic feet of natural gas were flared.

All Florida Beaches Remain OPEN! Pensacola Beach is open but has been closed to swimming and wading until further notice. Learn more.

Governor Charlie Crist, the State Emergency Response Team and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are actively coordinating and responding to the Deepwater Horizon incident.

The following is a summary of state and BP response actions as of July 4, 2010.

This forecast is based on the NWS spot forecast from Friday, July 2 PM. Currents were obtained from several models (NOAA Gulf of Mexico, West Florida Shelf/USF, TGLO/TAMU, NAVO/NRL) and HFR measurements. The model was initialized from Friday satellite imagery analysis (NOAA/NESDIS) and overflights. The leading edge may contain tarballs that are not readily observable from the imagery (hence not included in the model initialization). Oil near bay inlets could be brought into that bay by local tidal currents.

Moderate NE winds on Saturday are forecast to become SE by Saturday night and continue to have a southerly component through next week with speeds from 9-14 kts. Due to the northwestward movement of the slick over the past several days, the coastlines of MS, AL, and the FL panhandle west of Pensacola continue to be threatened by shoreline contacts. The Chandeleur Islands, Breton Sound and the Mississippi Delta also continue to be threatened. To the west of the Delta, overflights on Friday observed only scattered sheens offshore west to Caillou Bay; no oil was observed offshore of Atchafalaya. However, models suggest more oil may be moved west of the Delta threatening shorelines as far west as Caillou Bay within this forecast period.
