CCRIF RESPONDS TO GFBC’s Questions about Haitian Government Insurance Payout.

I have been contacted by the CCRIF, who has clarified and demystified concerns regarding the $8 Million (US) payout to the Haitian Government. Please read their response below:

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) paid the Haitian government US$ 7.75 – the payment due to the country as a result of its earthquake insurance coverage. CCRIF is a regional catastrophe fund for Caribbean governments that was set up in 2007 by the World Bank and offers earthquake and hurricane insurance coverage to the governments of (currently) 16 Caribbean nations, including Haiti. Payouts are based simply on the severity of the disaster (in Haiti’s case, the magnitude of the earthquake), and the amount of coverage purchased.

Fortunately, after the earthquake, CCRIF was able to contact Haitian government representatives responsible for managing the CCRIF policy and was able to ascertain exactly when and where to send the funds. These funds were paid 14 days after the earthquake and will be used by the Government as it sees fit in covering its ongoing expenses as well as contributing to the recovery efforts.

It seems as though the Rastaman can’t catch a break. First Buju, now Sizzla Kalonji has been arrested.

Popular dancehall artiste Miguel Collins popularly known as “Sizzla Kalonji” remains in police custody on Thursday.

He was picked up on Wednesday night by the August Town Police after they received reports that men were firing guns in the August Town area.

A senior officer at the Half-Way-Tree Police Station told RJR News that the artiste’s hands have been swabbed and samples sent to the government laboratory to determine whether he had fired a weapon.

The senior cop declined to give any more details on the incident.

Cuba is the top tourist pick of 2009: Record number of tourists visited Cuba in 2009

BY GFBC Staff:

It seems as though Cuba, was the top Caribbean destination in 2009 for visitors in Italy, Spain, France, and Germany. What does Cuba have that the rest of the Caribbean lacks?

Story Below:

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — Cuba closed 2009 with a historic record of foreign visitors and a 3.5% increase of tourists’ arrivals compared to 2008, when the previous record was set.

According to the National Office of Statistics, a total of 2,429,809 tourists visited the Caribbean nation in 2009 when Canada consolidated its position as the island’s main tourist market, followed by England, Spain, Italy and Germany.

In spite of this increase, revenues decreased by 11% compared to the previous year due to the international economic crisis that resulted in an 8% drop in the flow of travelers.

Taleb Rifai, General Secretary of the World Tourism Organization, said that this situation, which was aggravated by the impact of the H1N1 A virus pandemic, turned 2009 into one of the most difficult years for the sector.

In 2010, Cuba hopes to consolidate its position as a unique and complete tourist multi- destination thanks to its natural, cultural and historic richness, and the safety it offers to visitors.

Cuba’s leading role in the world tourist market has been confirmed by recent surveys. For example, Lonely Planet — the world largest publisher of travel guides – and concierge.com, a portal specialising in tourism, place the Caribbean nation sixth and seventh, respectively, in the list of favorite destinations.

Dominica PM sends his congratulations to St. Kitts & Nevis PM Dr. Denzil Douglas. Douglas also remains the chair of OECS (Organization of Eastern Caribbean States).

ST. KITTS, JANUARY 29TH 2010 (CUOPM) – Grenada and Dominica have sent congratulations to St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on his Labour Party’s re-election victory earlier this week.
Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerritt, whose Dominica Labour Party was returned to office last month, told Prime Minister Douglas that his “unprecedented mandate for a fourth term is a clear indication that the people of the Twin-Island Federation are satisfied with the work that you and your Government have done in your Country for almost two decades under trying conditions.”

“Let me assure you that I have always found your leadership at CARICOM and OECS levels to be very sound and enlightening and I am not at all surprised to see your people express their confidence in you for another term,” said Prime Minister Skerritt.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas on Wednesday said he was looking forward to working with re-elected St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas in helping the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) emerge from the global economic crisis.
In a congratulatory message following Dr. Douglas’s fourth consecutive victory at the polls on Monday, Thomas said he was also looking “forward to continuing our work to help the people of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to realise their dreams of unity among our countries.”

“I hope we can work together to help the sub-region emerge from the effects of the global economic crisis that has affected all our economies,” Prime Minister Thomas said.

OECS Director General, Her Excellency Dr. Len Ishmael told Prime Minister Douglas it was with immense pleasure and joy to join him in his historic victory at the polls.
“Indeed, we are all very proud of this achievement which is testimony of your commitment to serving with humility that redounds to the improved well-being of your people. Undoubtedly, this is reflected in the confidence nd trust placed in you by the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to serve them and the OECS region as a whole for yet another term,” said Dr. Ishmael.

She said the OECS looks forward to serving the region under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Douglas, especially as the sub-region proceed into an Economic Union.

The ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) won six of the eight seats on St. Kitts during the elections. The opposition People’s Action Movement won two seats. On Nevis, the Concerned Citizens Movement won two and the Nevis Reformation Party one.

Yeah, AT&T is requiring messaging plans with feature phones

Yeah, AT&T is requiring messaging plans with feature phones

att-messaging

After we whispered that AT&T might be requiring messaging plans when you purchase select feature phones, we were hit up by a flood of connects. Long story short, it’s true, and here’s the break down:

  • Phones that require a messaging plan at time of purchase include: Pantech Reveal, Pantech Impact, Motorola Karma, Samsung Flight, Samsung Impression, Samsung Magnet, Samsung Solstice, Samsung Mythic, Samsung Propel, LG Xenon, LG Neon, and the LG Vu.
  • It looks like the minimum monthly cost when buying a “Quick Messaging” phone is around $20. That’s a $5 200 SMS/MMS plan and a $15/month unlimited data plan. It doesn’t look like you can walk out of the door without paying less than $20/mo in features in addition to your voice plan.
  • There are slightly different requirements if you have a family plan, so check those out in detail with your AT&T liaison.
  • If you have an existing “Quick Messaging” device, you don’t have to do a thing. But, if you want to ever upgrade to a new device, you’d then be hit with the messaging feature requirement.

Not exactly the best news for those looking to keep their wireless bill pretty low (and straight forward). Catherine Zeta Jones, where you at?

Thanks, to all our connects that broke this down for us!
