Stanford, 61, has spent much of that time in a federal prison in Houston, and the mustachioed ex-tycoon may give evidence in a case watched closely by myriad investors who still don’t know if they will get any of their money back.

The trial has been delayed due to legal maneuvers, attorneys being hired and fired, and a prison fight that left Stanford, a towering man of six feet and four inches (193 centimeters), badly injured.

Stanford has pleaded not guilty to a revised 14-count federal indictment accusing him of bilking approximately 30,000 investors from over 100 countries through bogus investments with Stanford International Bank, based in Antigua.

Fallen Financier & Cricket Mogul Allen Stanford

As a dual citizen of the United States and the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda, Stanford was known for conspicuous largesse, especially on the two islands, where he was knighted.

In the West Indies he created the Stanford 20/20 Cricket tournament which, in 2008, captured a global television audience of 300 million.

But his personal fiefdom began to crumble when it attracted scrutiny from US financial regulators and he was charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with fraud in February 2009.

According to the indictment Stanford “perpetrated a scheme to defraud investors who purchased SIB (certificates of deposit) of billions of dollars by soliciting funds under false pretenses.”

He then failed to invest those funds as promised, misappropriated money for personal use, created and disseminated false and fraudulent accounts to falsely show investors how their funds had been invested, and funneled bribes to Antiguan regulators to conceal the scheme, said prosecutors.

Following weeks of speculation about the federal investigation into his dealings, Stanford was arrested in June 2009 outside his girlfriend’s home in the US state of Virginia.

In 2006, Forbes Magazine ranked Stanford as the 605th richest person in the world, with a fortune of $2.2 billion. After most of those funds were frozen by the courts, Stanford was forced to accept appointed counsel.

But he has gone through more than a dozen lawyers since. Some he fired, but others quit. As recently as last week, Stanford’s court-appointed attorneys, Robert Scardino and Ali Fazel, asked US District Judge David Hittner permission to withdraw from the case, but the request was denied.

Judge Hittner had also ruled that Stanford was a flight risk and refused to set a bail bond, leaving him in custody.

While behind bars Stanford was involved in a fight with another inmate in which he was smashed into a steel pole, breaking many facial bones, and thrown onto a concrete floor injuring the back of his head.

He suffered a concussion which his attorneys claimed left him with memory loss and unable to participate in his defense.

Following the altercation, prison medics also prescribed antidepressants and strong antianxiety medication for Stanford. The combination, his attorneys argued, left him unfit for trial.

But the judge disagreed, ordering Stanford, who had become addicted to the anxiety medication, to undertake drug treatment and last month the accused was declared competent to stand trial.

Defense attorneys reportedly plan to have Stanford take the stand, but a fraud detection expert said the tactic could backfire.

“The prosecution gets to put their case on first. And when push comes to shove and all the evidence is on the table, the defense often changes its mind,” said Allen Bachman, of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in Austin, Texas.

A key test for prosecutors will be keeping the complex case against Stanford understandable to the jury.

“They need to keep it simple and concentrate on their best evidence,” Bachman said. “They don’t want to go down the worm hole.”

HAVANA — Cuban dissident Wilmar Villar was buried in his hometown in eastern Cuba on Friday, rights activists told AFP, as Havana denied the inmate was a political prisoner who died after a 50-day hunger strike.
Villar, 31, is the second dissident to die here after a hunger strike in less than two years, and his passing drew condemnation from national and international human rights groups, as well as foreign governments.
Cuba’s communist rulers “bear complete moral, political and legal responsibility for the death of Wilmar, because he was in the custody of the authorities,” said dissident leader Elizardo Sanchez, calling it an “avoidable death.”
A wake was held for Villar at a funeral home in his town of Contramaestre, 900 kilometers (560 miles) southeast of Havana, but some said the authorities were preventing dissidents from attending.

Cuban dissident Wilmar Villar was buried in his hometown in eastern Cuba on Friday (AFP/HO/File

“I have a government agent in front of my house,” said Jose Daniel Ferrer, an ex-political prisoner who heads the opposition Patriotic Union of Cuba — to which Villar belonged.
More than 30 dissidents in several towns “have already been arrested so they can be prevented from going to the funeral,” added Ferrer, who was released in 2010.
Villar’s remains were buried later Friday in a ceremony attended by family, and under tight police scrutiny, activist Ana Luisa Bedey told AFP.

Sanchez, who leads the banned but tolerated Cuban Committee for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, said Villar had spent several days in “critical condition” at a hospital in the southeast of the Caribbean island.
The government of President Raul Castro denies it is holding any political prisoners, and considers jailed opposition activists to be US-backed “mercenaries.”
In an official note published Friday on the state-run Cubadebate website, the government said it had “abundant evidence and testimony” that Villar was not a dissident.
It slammed what it called an “international defamatory campaign” led by foreign news media “in collusion with domestic counterrevolutionary elements” over the case.

The statement said Villar had died of “multiple organ failure” which led to “septic shock.”
Villar had been convicted of “contempt, resistance and assault” and joined 60 political prisoners being held in Cuba, according to Sanchez’s group.
He was married to Maritza Pelegrino, an activist in the opposition Ladies in White group. He leaves two daughters, ages five and 10.
Villar is the second Cuban dissident to die in a hunger strike since Orlando Zapata — considered a “prisoner of conscience” by Amnesty International — who expired after 85 days without food in February 2010.
In the United States, home to 1.5 million Cuban-Americans, the White House said President Barack Obama’s “thoughts and prayers are with the wife, family, and friends of Wilmar Villar.”
Villar’s “senseless death highlights the ongoing repression of the Cuban people and the plight faced by brave individuals standing up for the universal rights of all Cubans,” the White House said, adding that the United States “will not waiver in our support for the liberty of the Cuban people.”
Havana and Washington have not had full diplomatic ties since 1961.
In Spain, home to thousands of Cuban dissidents, the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy expressed “consternation” over Villar’s death, and urged Cuba to “liberate all political prisoners.”
Jose Miguel Vivanco with the watchdog group Human Rights Watch said Villar was not allowed to speak in his defense or have an attorney present at his trial.

Know Censorship on the Internet, Arts & Entertainment

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Censorship is the suppression of speech and art or other public communication, which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as determined by our government, states Mike McNeilly. Censorship by the government is unconstitutional and creates a “chilling effect” on the right to express our beliefs.

The “chilling effect” is the term used to describe the inhibition of the legitimate exercise of a constitutional right by the threat of legal sanction. The right that is most often described as being suppressed by a “chilling effect” is the right of free speech. Our rights are clearly stated in the Constitution: “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech or the press.” A “chilling effect” may be caused by legal actions such as the passing of a law, the decision of a court, or the threat of a lawsuit; any legal action that would cause people to hesitate to exercise their right to free speech for fear of the legal consequences.

The Internet is now facing the potential of censorship on-line. The arts & entertainment industry are increasingly being challenged by this “chilling effect” and censorship. Artists, like Mike McNeilly, create street art and super murals in support of the First Amendment and our right of free speech in America and have been censored by city officials and politicians. After the threats of arrests and fines, Artist Mike McNeilly created a street super mural called “Know Censorship.” The mural states, “Know Censorship,” know our First Amendment rights and continue to protect them. While painting another large scale mural called “Liberty,” he was charged with criminal counts after partially painting the 120-foot-high mural. When authorities stopped him from completing it, he added the word “CENSORED” to “Liberty.” The case was taken to Federal Court to protect the artist from prosecution and to recognize the artist’s First Amendment rights.

Carnival Slumps After Forecasting Cruise Ship Wreck May Cost $95 Million

    | 16/01/2012 | 0 Comments
    EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Carnival Corp. (CCL) fell the most in more than 10 years in London trading after saying the grounding of the Costa Concordia off Italy’s Tuscan Coast that killed at least six people will cost the company as much as $95 million.
Carnival, the world’s biggest cruise operator with brands including Cunard and Princess Cruises, dropped as much as 23 percent to 1,730 pence, the biggest intraday decline since Sept. 17, 2001, and was down 17 percent at 12:30 p.m.

escuers inspect the Costa Concordia on January 15, 2012, after the cruise ship ran aground and keeled over off the Isola del Giglio.

The vessel will be out of service for at least the current financial year ending Nov. 30, the Miami- and London-based company said in a statement today. The reduction in fiscal 2012 earnings will amount to 11 cents to 12 cents a share, it said. Carnival said it anticipates additional costs to the business that aren’t possible to determine at this time.
“There will be negative short-term implications for bookings across the cruise sector as pictures of the stricken ship are flashed around the world,” said Wyn Ellis, an analyst at Numis Securities in London who reduced his recommendation on the stock to “hold” from “add.”
The insurance loss could be $500 million to $1 billion, depending on liability claims, exceeding the loss from the Exxon Valdez disaster including pollution, said Joy Ferneyhough, an insurance analyst at Espirito Santo Investment Bank.

    Insurers
The Costa Concordia was insured by companies including Assicurazioni Generali SpA, RSA Insurance Group Plc and XL Group Plc, said three people with knowledge of the policies. They are among several insurers facing total costs of about 405 million euros ($512 million), said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the terms of the policies are confidential.
Carnival is self-insured for the loss of the use of the Costa Concordia, which is insured for damage with a deductible of approximately $30 million, the company said. Third-party personal injury liability insurance carries a deductible of approximately $10 million for this incident.
Cash costs, excluding the capital cost of the ship, probably won’t exceed $1 billion, which Carnival should be able to accommodate, Numis’s Ellis said.
“Consumer sentiment soon recovers following such tragic events, and we do not expect there to be long-term negative consequences for demand,” Ellis said. “Tragic accidents happen with greater frequency and, sadly, often greater loss of life, in the aviation and rail industry and this does not prevent people using these modes of transport.”

    Dual Listing

Carnival, which has dual U.S. and U.K. listings, had risen 5.7 percent in London this year before today and about 5 percent in New York. That compares with a 16 percent gain for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) U.S. markets are closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Genting Hong Kong Ltd. (GENHK) fell 3.2 percent today.
Some investors may switch holdings into Royal Caribbean after the Concordia incident, according to Tim Ramskill, an analyst at Credit Suisse in London. “If the industry already didn’t face enough challenges — fuel price volatility, capacity absorption, and weakness in the European economy — this unfortunate event will reverberate on the group,” he said.
Costa Crociere Chief Executive Officer Pier Luigi Foschi told a press conference in Genoa that he doesn’t foresee a long- term impact on the industry.

    Search for Survivors
Rescuers are still searching for as many as 17 people missing from the Costa Concordia. About 60 people were injured after the ship carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew hit submerged rocks in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
TUI Cruises isn’t getting cancellations and can’t determine the effects on bookings, said Alexa Huener, a spokeswoman. Thomas Cook Group Plc (TCG), Europe’s second-largest tour operator after Tui Travel Plc (TT/), said its passengers on the Concordia were safe and it was making alternative arrangements for customers who hadn’t already joined the vessel, according to a spokeswoman for the London-based company. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises spokeswoman Negar Etminan said it’s too early to forecast the likely effect.

“We would highlight the potential impact on booking yields in an environment where booking patterns remain subdued,” Greg Johnson, a Shore Capital analyst, said in a note, adding tighter operational procedures could add to annual running costs.
Europe generated about 38 percent of Carnival’s revenue in fiscal 2010, the last full year for which geographic results are available. Its Genoa-based Costa Crociere unit is the continent’s largest cruise line based on passengers and ship capacity, according to Carnival.

Police arrest Italian captain of cruise ship that ran aground, killing 3

    ROME (CNN) -
The Italian captain of the cruise ship that ran aground — killing three people and injuring 20 more — was arrested late Saturday and is being investigated for abandoning ship and manslaughter, said a local prosecutor in Grosetto, Italy.

Abandoning ship is the more serious of the potential charges, authorities said.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, had been earlier interviewed by investigators in Porto Santo Stefano about what happened when the 4,200-passenger Costa Concordia struck rocks in shallow water off Italy’s western coast, said officer Emilio Del Santo of the Coastal Authorities of Livorno.

Authorities were looking at why the ship didn’t hail a mayday during the accident near the Italian island of Giglio on Friday night, officials said. The ship is owned by Genoa-based Costa Cruises.

“At the moment we can’t exclude that the ship had some kind of technical problem, and for this reason moved towards the coast in order to save the passengers, the crew and the ship. But they didn’t send a mayday. The ship got in contact with us once the evacuation procedures were already ongoing,” Del Santo said prior to the announcement of the arrest.

Giuseppe Orsina, a spokesman with the local civil protection agency, said 43 to 51 people were missing, though authorities are reviewing passenger lists to confirm the exact figure.

“These people could be still on the island of Giglio, in private houses or in hospitals,” Orsina said.

The coast guard said 50 to 70 people could be missing.

Authorities said earlier Saturday they believed everyone was accounted for, but that they did not have a definitive list of names.

“Fear and panic are comprehensible in a ship long over 300 meters with over 4,000 passengers,” Del Santo said. “We can confirm that the ship has a breach on the hull of about 90 meters, and that the right side of it is completely under water.”

Two French tourists and a crew member from Peru were killed, Port authorities in Livorno said. One of the victims was a 65-year-old woman who died of a heart attack, according to authorities.

A surviving crew member, Rosalyn Rincon, 30, of Blackpool, England, said she wanted to know why the cruise ship was sailing so close to shore. She described a harrowing grounding of the vessel, whose tilting and rising water evoked the film “Titanic,” she said.

“I’m pretty much angry, and I want to know why we were so close to the coast,” said Rincon, who works as a dancer on the ship and was entertaining passengers by performing a trick inside a box with a magician when the accident occurred.

Nautilus International, a maritime employees trade union, called the accident a “wake-up call” to regulators.

“Nautilus is concerned about the rapid recent increases in the size of passenger ships — with the average tonnage doubling over the past decade,” said Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson in a statement. “Many ships are now effectively small towns at sea, and the sheer number of people onboard raises serious questions about evacuation.”

The ship was 2.5 miles off route when it struck a rocky sandbar, according to the Italian Coast Guard. Local fishermen say the island coast of Giglio is known for its rocky sea floor.

Gianni Onorato, president of Costa Cruises, expressed “deep sorrow for this terrible tragedy,” but said the cruise line was unable to answer all the questions that authorities are now investigating.

“On the basis of the initial evidence — still preliminary — Costa Concordia, under the command of Master Francesco Schettino, was sailing its regularly scheduled itinerary from Civitavecchia to Savona, Italy, when the ship struck a submerged rock,” Onorato said in a statement before the announcement of the captain’s announcement.

“Captain Schettino, who was on the bridge at the time, immediately understood the severity of the situation and performed a maneuver intended to protect both guests and crew, and initiated security procedures to prepare for an eventual ship evacuation,” he continued.

“Unfortunately, that operation was complicated by a sudden tilting of the ship that made disembarkation difficult,” Onorato said.

Some passengers fell into the chilly waters during the rescue, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported.

The huge ship, which was lying on its side in shallow water Saturday evening, was carrying about 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members when it ran aground around dinner time.

Initial reports suggested as many as six people had been killed, but it was unclear why the number dropped. About 1,500 of the people aboard the ship were on their way home Saturday, the Civil Protection Authority said.

Passengers described how the lights went out and it then became clear the ship had hit something, prompting scenes of chaos.

Laurie Willits from Ontario, who was watching a magic show with her husband at that moment, told CNN: “We heard a scraping noise to the left of the ship and then my husband said ‘we’re sliding off our seats.’”

U.N. “Outraged” at Sexual Abuse by Peacekeepers in Haiti

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 23, 2012 (IPS) – The Caribbean nation of Haiti, still struggling to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake, is once again trying to cope with the sexual abuse of minors by U.N. peacekeepers – for the third time in five years.

The two cases of “sexual exploitation and abuse involving minors”, reported last week, are traced to U.N. police officers serving with the U.N. Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

“The United Nations is outraged by these allegations and takes its responsibility to deal with them extremely seriously,” U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters Monday.

In view of the gravity of the situation – and the recurrence of sexual abuse by peacekeepers in Haiti – the United Nations has already dispatched a team of officials to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince “to investigate these allegations with the utmost determination”.

MINUSTAH is emphasising the responsibility and accountability of the chain of command in both preventing and taking prompt action when such allegations arise, Nesirky said.

The mission will take action to support the alleged victims, he added. But he did not disclose the nationalities of the police officers involved.

Unlike cases involving U.N. military personnel – who are answerable only to their home countries – investigations into allegations involving U.N. Police fall under the responsibility of the United Nations.

The civilian and police personnel serving in peacekeeping missions are treated as international civil servants under the authority of the United Nations.

Mariano Fernandez, the secretary-general’s special representative and head of MINUSTAH, said: “I want to reiterate my commitment to uphold the policy of zero tolerance of abuse by the staff of the Mission.”

Each member of the U.N. personnel, whether he or she is a civilian, member of the military or police, must observe a standard of exemplary conduct, he added.

“This is a commitment that is required when joining the United Nations, anywhere in the world.”

“We will continue to take the strictest measures to ensure, where appropriate, that the perpetrators of such acts are punished with the utmost severity,” he added.

Back in November 2007, about 108 military personnel from Sri Lanka serving in Haiti were deported to their home country after being accused of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of minors.

One of the expelled peacekeepers was quoted in a local newspaper as saying, rather defiantly, “What do you expect us to do when the U.N. is providing us with free condoms?”

Since the United Nations has no political or legal authority to penalise military personnel, most of them escape punishment for their criminal activities because national governments have either refused or have been slow in meting out justice within their own court systems.

Last year, five U.N. peacekeepers from Uruguay were accused of sexually assaulting a Haitian teenager, which was caught on tape, triggering public demonstrations and anti-U.N. protests in the streets of Port-au-Prince.

But early this month, all five were freed by a Uruguayan military court because the 18-year-old Haitian victim could not be traced.

The Uruguayans have promised to re-open the case if the youth appears in court.

In 2007, it was reported that girls as young as 13 were having sex with U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti for as little as a dollar, Ezili Dant, president of the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network (HLLN), said in a letter to the United Nations.

The continued sexual abuse of minors in Haiti – and also in other peacekeeping missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Cote d’Ivoire – has alarmed the United Nations.

Allegations of abuse have dogged U.N. peacekeeping missions since their inception over 50 years ago.

The issue was thrust into the spotlight after the United Nations found, in early 2005, that peacekeepers in Congo had sex with Congolese women and girls, usually in exchange for food or small sums of money.

The U.N. peacekeeping department instituted a “zero tolerance” policy toward sexual abuse, a new code of conduct for its more than 110,000 peacekeepers deployed around the world, and new training for officers and all U.N. personnel.

But that has not deterred the continued sexual abuse of women and minors in peacekeeping missions worldwide.

The United Nations says it has done much to confront the problem since 1999, when U.N. peacekeepers in Bosnia were reported to have been involved in a sex-trafficking ring.

In 2003, the United Nations issued a “zero tolerance” policy for sexual exploitation and abuse.

Currently, all peacekeepers undergo extensive training with a major focus on sexual conduct.

US jury selection opens in cricket mogul trial

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

HOUSTON, Texas — Jury selection began Monday in the trial of the fallen financier and cricket mogul Allen Stanford, accused of running a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, according to an attorney for the firm representing him.
The Houston Chronicle reported that 80 potential jurors were interviewed Monday, and that the selection would continue on Tuesday.
Stanford, 61, has spent three years since his arrest in a federal prison in Houston, and the mustachioed ex-tycoon may give evidence in a case watched closely by myriad investors who still don’t know if they will get any of their money back.
Stanford has pleaded not guilty to a revised 14-count federal indictment accusing him of bilking approximately 30,000 investors from over 100 countries through bogus investments with Stanford International Bank, based in Antigua.

According to the indictment, Stanford “perpetrated a scheme to defraud investors who purchased SIB (certificates of deposit) of billions of dollars by soliciting funds under false pretenses.”
He then failed to invest those funds as promised, misappropriated money for personal use, created and disseminated false and fraudulent accounts to falsely show investors how their funds had been invested, and funneled bribes to Antiguan regulators to conceal the scheme, said prosecutors.

Stanford was arrested in June 2009 outside his girlfriend’s home in the US state of Virginia.
In 2006, Forbes Magazine ranked Stanford as the 605th richest person in the world, with a fortune of $2.2 billion. After most of those funds were frozen by the courts, Stanford was forced to accept appointed counsel.

Vybz Kartel

According to a recent story in The Jamaica Gleaner, Adidja Palmer, internationally known as Vybz Kartel has been implicated in five additional murders. Palmer was charged on September 29, 2011 by (“Jamaica’s Finest”) Jamaica’s Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT), incarcerated with no bail since October 3, 2011. Kartel was charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Days before Palmer was expected to appear in court to answer to drugs, murder and weapons charges in relation to the shooting death of 27-year-old promoter Barrington “Bossie” Burton, Kartel a/k/a the “World Boss” was charged with the murder of a second man, Clive “Lizard” Williams. Subsequently, a video surfaced of the alleged murder.

Although The Jamaican Gleaner reported that, Williams’ body has yet to be recovered, they have “graphic descriptions” of the murder. The body was said to be partially burnt and in the process of decomposition. Reportedly, a section of the premises of the crime scene was also burnt, or destroyed by fire. Assistant Police Commissioner Ealan Powell, told the Gleaner that Kartel is being further investigated “in connection with a number of murders, shootings and gunrunning”.

In April of this year, BBC News reported that Jamaica said it has had significant success in bringing down its murder rate, one of the highest in the world. Our question, How has the rate significantly decreased with an overtasked and undermanned police force? According to Nationmaster.com, and sources provided by the Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica currently has over 6,000 unsolved murders. Yet, crimes in Jamaica are on the decline? Further,

In addition, the increase of abuses of “extra-judicial killings and other abuses by security forces have increased”. In the case of Kartel, “while detectives are continuing their probe of Kartel and members and of his Portmore Empire Crew, the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force has now turned the searchlight on six policemen who have been implicated in a major security breach at the Gun Court Remand facility, where the entertainer is being held. The six officers have been transferred with immediate effect”. Such an incident should not be taken lightly, especially when videotaped evidence has surfaced of police committing such overt acts of accepting bribes for visitation rights.

Consequently, the police were not fired, just transferred.

One must ask if Kartel is being setup?

AJC on the New Greek Government

AJC on the New Greek Government
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2011

As the new Greek unity government was named, AJC expressed the hope that the leaders would successfully confront the major economic challenges facing the country.

AJC Executive Director David Harris:

“We are long-time friends of Greece, having visited the country countless times over the years to broaden and deepen our links with political leaders, civic representatives, and the Jewish community. Indeed, an AJC delegation was just in Athens and Thessaloniki last week to express solidarity with our friends and learn more about the current situation. We now wish Prime Minister Lucas Papademos every success in addressing the looming issues before him and his countrymen.

“We are, however, deeply concerned by the presence in the new unity government of the LAOS party, headed by Georgios Karatzaferis. According to reports, Karatzaferis has a record of outrageous statements about Jews, including, but not limited to, spreading the libel that Jews were implicated in the 9/11 attacks by their alleged absence from work that day, when nothing could have been further from the truth. We urge the new Greek leadership, understandably preoccupied with the economic crisis, not to permit any such expression of outright bigotry or anti-Semitism to emerge from its ranks.

“At this momentous time of transition for Greece, we wish to take the opportunity to voice our admiration and respect for George Papandreou, the outgoing Prime Minister. When he took office he faced a monumental task, which he sought to fulfill with courage and conviction. Moreover, in foreign policy, he forged a warm link with neighboring Israel, which has accrued to the mutual benefit of both countries. We thank him for his leadership and friendship, knowing that he will continue to play an active role in the life of his beloved country.”

Prime Minister Bruce Golding

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding recently stated that he would be stepping down and would not seek re-election. The masses have spoken and surprisingly the PM listened. Golding will step down as prime minister as soon as a new leader has been elected. According to a statement from Daryl Vaz, minister with responsibility for information, Golding conveyed this decision to the party’s central executive at it’s quarterly meeting. The pressure from Golding’s mishandling of the Manatt Affair has fueled speculation of the PM’s decision to step down. Could Golding set a precedent for the rest of the Caribbean’s political and fiscally inept Prime Ministers?

We applaud the efforts of Bruce Golding for paving the way for new leadership, fresh ideas, and for his ultimate sacrifice of putting country above self. Hopefully, other Prime Ministers are taking notes; because the world is watching. The Caribbean can only benefit from new ideas, talent, and leadership. It is time for the younger generation of leaders to take the reins and steer the Caribbean through these challenging times. Now is the time for many of our current leaders to pass the batons to the younger generation. Leadership is the key to promote the innovation and transformation of the Caribbean from dependents to independent economic powers.

The trumpet has sounded and the people have spoken, gone are the days of tolerating decades of broken promises and broken parties. The news of Golding’s stepping circled the globe and reverberated throughout the internet strengthening the voice of the people. Our current leaders have lost their way, Our leaders have lost faith in the powers of their people, Our leaders still find it difficult to see what is happening.

St. Kitts Prime Minister Denzil Douglas

Unemployment, poverty and crime are spiraling out of control. Our leaders still find it difficult to see what is happening. The hopes and dreams of the people of the region are fading fast, it is now time to take a stand and wrest the reins from the comfortable and reckless incumbents leaders. Or better yet, can we have a few more volunteers?

On Monday, January 30, “106 & PARK” will air a special episode dedicated to young parents titled “Young, Single & Parenting.” The live, 90-minute special will deal exclusively with issues affecting young parents focusing specifically on the realities of African American youth.

Hosted by Terrence J and Rocsi, “106 & PARK Presents: Young, Single & Parenting” will speak directly to youths in the trenches – young people who are currently parents and those expecting. Participants will be informed of the responsibilities they can expect, the resources available and their rights as parents.

“We are proud of our place as the only daily source of Black Youth culture on television and we know it’s about more than music, celebrities and fun,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials. “On 106 & PARK, we’ve taken the time to discuss relationship violence, teen body image issues, AIDS prevention and other topics relevant to our audience. Many in our audience are young parents and need more information and guidance than they’re getting about how to work through certain issues; not the least of which is working on the relationship with the other parent for the benefit of the child. It’s our hope that this special edition of 106 & PARK will help strengthen young families,” said Hill.

On “Young, Single & Parenting” viewers will hear live testimonials from young, single parents in our studio audience. PERPETRATORS OF ‘HEINOUS’ ATTACKS IN NIGERIA MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE – SECURITY COUNCIL
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

The Security Council has strongly condemned the multiple terrorist attacks that occurred in Kano, Nigeria, in recent days, causing numerous deaths and injuries, and underlined the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The 15-member body expressed its deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of these “heinous crimes” and their families, and to the people and Government of Nigeria, in a statement issued to the press last night.

Multiple attacks across Kano last week resulted in large-scale casualties and massive destruction to property, with media reports saying that some 150 people were killed during a series of explosions targeting police buildings and immigration centres around the northern city.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group,” said the statement.

“The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Nigerian authorities in this regard.”

CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY RECOGNISES FALKLANDS’ RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION

GRENADA, Jan 24 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Ministers attending the Seventh Ministerial United Kingdom-Caribbean Forum have agreed an Action Plan, which recognises the right of self determination for the Falkland Islanders.

The meeting, held in Grenada, was held under the theme “Prosperity Towards Sustainable Growth” and was attended by the UK Government and members of the Caribbean Community organization (CARICOM).
Numerous Caribbean Heads of Government and Ministers attended the meeting, with the UK represented by the Foreign Secretary William Hague and Overseas Territories Minister Jeremy Browne as well as Home Office Minister James Brokenshire and Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan.
The forum agreed an Action Plan containing agreements on a range of issues from climate change to sustainable development.
Of great significance to the Falkland Islands, the Forum agreed: “To support the principle and the right to self determination for all peoples, including the Falkland Islanders, recognising the historical importance of self-determination in the political development of the Caribbean, and its core status as an internationally agreed principle under the United Nations Charter”.
Member of the Legislative Assembly Jan Cheek said: “We are delighted to have our rights recognized by our friends in the Caribbean. We have much in common with island states all around the world, and we have long maintained our right as a people to determine the future of our home and country. This basic right is what the Argentine Government is trying to deny us.”
The Action Plan endorses the position of the Falkland Islands people, who have chosen to retain their status as a British Overseas Territory. The Argentine Government claim sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, and have adopted a policy of isolating the Falkland Islands from South America. — NNN-MERCOPRESS

Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica surge into final of Caribbean T20

By: Associated Press, The Associated Press

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Defending champions Trinidad & Tobago surged into the final of the Caribbean Twenty20 cricket competition here Saturday with a five-wicket win over Barbados in a low-scoring semifinal at Kensington Oval.
Trinidad & Tobago will meet Jamaica in the final, after it earlier eased past the Windward Islands by five wickets.
The Trinidadian bowlers limited Barbados to 90 all out off 19.5 overs with spinners Sunil Narine (2-10) and Samuel Badree (2-11) stifling the hosts with two wickets apiece. West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo took 3-23.
Kieron Pollard hit an unbeaten 31 and shared an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 48 with Jason Mohammed (11 not out) to see Trinidad & Tobago progress to Sunday’s final.
Narine collected the key scalp of Dwayne Smith, who chipped to midwicket and Badree removed captain Kirk Edwards and Kevin Stoute to reduce Barbados to 27-3.
The innings never recovered despite Shane Dowrich’s topscore of 22.

Caribbean ally invites President Ma to visit region

Caribbean ally invites President Ma to visit region

Taipei, Jan. 22 (CNA) The leader of one of Taiwan’s allies in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has invited President Ma Ying-jeou to visit the region in the wake of Ma’s re-election on Jan. 14.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said last week that he had sent a letter of invitation to Ma and had also congratulated him on his election to a second four-year term.

“I want to congratulate my friend President Ma on his very comfortable victory at the polls … and also a return to a parliamentary majority of the Kuomintang,” Gonsalves said in media briefing in his country.

“The opposition (Democratic Progressive Party) did very well and Taiwan has a robust and vibrant multiparty system. We share that in common,” Gonsalves said.

The prime minister said that Ma, in his first four years in office, showed commitment to strengthening relations between Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“… And we have reciprocated,” Gonsalves said, adding that he was looking forward to working with the Taiwan president over the next four years.

Noting that Taiwan has diplomatic ties with four other CARICOM countries — Belize, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and Haiti — Gonsalves said Ma should give thought to visiting the Caribbean allies soon.

The Dominican Republic, a non-CARICOM state, is also one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the region.

“I have asked him (Ma) to consider visiting us in this term in office, sooner rather than later, because the sooner he gets to it the better,” Gonsalves said. “It would be a wonderful thing, certainly, for him to come and visit us.”

Former President Chen Shui-bian visited St. Vincent and the Grenadines and some of Taiwan’s other Caribbean allies in 2005.

“It may be not a bad time, seven years thereafter, for us to have a visit (by Taiwan’s leader),” Gonsalves said. “Of course, the president is very busy and he probably has his schedule worked out for the year already, but I have extended an invitation to him.”
