A day after Facebook went public, its co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg Saturday updated his relationship status to “married”. Zuckerberg had an eventful “timeline” this week with the addition of two events – Facebook IPO Friday and his wedding with his longtime girl friend Saturday.

This photo provided by Facebook shows Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan at their wedding ceremony in Palo Alto, Calif., Saturday, May 19, 2012. Zuckerberg updated his status to "married" on Saturday. The ceremony took place in Zuckerberg's backyard before fewer than 100 guests, who all thought they were there to celebrate Chan's graduation. Zuckerberg (28) tied the knot with his girlfriend Priscilla Chan (27) in a simple ceremony held in their backyard Saturday. The multi-billionaire placed a simple “ruby sparkler” in Chan’s finger in the ceremony which was attended by less than 100 guests in Palo Alto, California.

The wedding came as a surprise to the guests as they thought they were attending a party to celebrate Chan’s graduation from the UCSF medical school. The guests were informed about the marriage after they arrived at the event.

Both Zuckerberg and Chan announced their wedding on Facebook by changing their relationship status and by adding a “Life Event” to their Facebook timeline along with their photo in wedding dresses. Zuckerberg wore a dark blue suit and tie with a white shirt while Chan was dressed up in a traditional white laced wedding dress with a veil.

The event and the status were being “liked” by thousands of people and hundreds were commenting their wishes to the couple in their timeline.

Zuckerberg met Chan in Harvard in 2003 before he co-founded Facebook in 2004 and they had been dating for the last nine years.

Chan, born in Braintree in Massachusetts, did her schooling at Quincy High School and worked at FASE as director/mentor before completing her graduation from Harvard in 2007, according to her Facebook profile. For a year, she worked as a teacher at the Harker School and later joined the UCSF for her medical education.

Chan has written in her profile that she “likes cooking, the food network, warm places, sun dried tomatoes and diet a&w. i am a simple creature.”

An Illinois judge set bail at $1.5 million for each of the three suspects accused of traveling to Chicago “to commit acts of domestic terrorism” during the NATO summit.

In court, prosecutors accused the three men of “preparing for violence and destruction” such as stockpiling Molotov cocktails and other weapons and planning attacks on police.

According to the AP and MSNBC, prosecutors accused the three men of plotting attacks on President Barack Obama’s local campaign headquarters, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s house, police stations and other targets.

But the defense called those accusations “propaganda” and contended authorities “infiltrated” a peaceful group and set up the three men.

The judge set the three defendants’ next court date for Tuesday.

  • Fighting child sexual abuse in the Caribbean

    | 19/05/2012 | 0 Comments
    EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

KINGSTON, Jamaica, 18 May 2012 – A nine-year old boy was systematically raped by his pastor while his mother was at work; an 18-month old baby boy died of internal damage after being raped by his uncle; a little girl was infected with gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes and HIV by an uncle who was in and out of prison.

These are some of the cases Sandra Knight, a general practitioner at the paediatric hospital in Kingston, has treated over the years. The abuse tormented her, compelling her to speak out to the press. Dr. Knight’s accounts have created an uproar in the Eastern Caribbean, and an avalanche of front-page stories about child sexual abuse has followed.

“I felt that my peers were becoming complacent about this issue,” Dr. Knight said. “But I felt I had a tsunami in front of me, which was affecting me because I also have a 6-year-old daughter. I saw these children dying, getting sick, being traumatized for life.”

    A silent emergency

Child sexual abuse is shrouded in secrecy and abetted by shame. While most abuse is hidden and up-to-date statistics are scarce, it is known that nearly 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 around the world have experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual violence worldwide.

In the Caribbean region, sexual violence against children is greatly underreported, and this abuse is often culturally sanctioned. A study in Jamaica indicated that men often believe they have a right to engage in sex with girls under their care, while children in Guyana reported believing that sexual violence can be blamed on a victim’s clothing. Sexual violence against boys is especially underreported, and in some countries, is not even recognized as a crime.

“Sexual abuse happens everywhere – at home, school and in other institutions, and has a serious physical, psychological and social impact, not only on girls and boys, but also on the fabric of society. It is one of the main factors that contribute to HIV infections, and that is why it is not surprising that this region has one of the highest prevalence of HIV and AIDS worldwide,” said Nadine Perrault, UNICEF Regional Child Protection Adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Our experiences in preventing and responding to sexual abuse have taught us that laws by themselves have been ineffective in protecting children, mainly because of the silence surrounding the issue and the risks that victims face in speaking out – risks such as stigma, shame, harm and further violence. And then, often, children do not know where to turn.”

May 18, 2012 – More than sixty business leaders from Central America and the Caribbean met this week in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago to discuss new opportunities for partnerships and expanding business between the two regions, as well as challenges to trade.

Taking part in the closed door meetings were representatives of top conglomerates, public and private companies, business families, and government representatives and ministers, including Alberto Alemán Zubieta, CEO of the Panama Canal Authority, Representatives of the Ansa McAl Group, Neal and Massy Holdings, Guardian Holdings, Demerara Distillers, Grupo Unicomer, Cabcorp and Bridgestone, as well as regional airlines, manufacturers, producers associations and banks. Also present at the meeting were the Secretaries General of Central American Integration System (SICA), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

The gathering, which represented billions of dollars in business interests from both regions, was also addressed by the President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli.

Convened by the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, and hosted by the government of Trinidad and Tobago through the Minister of Trade and Industry Stephen Cadiz, the meeting identified opportunities for investment and partnerships in several countries. Obstacles to business, including transnational business registration laws, visa restrictions, port congestion problems, taxes, duties and tariffs were also discussed.

Minister Cadiz said of the meeting, “This gathering proves that investment capital is available, so options and opportunities must be generated. We are, therefore making a solid commitment to working together to overcome these challenges to business. We need to do more and smarter business in this current global economic environment.”

Assistant Secretary General Ramdin said the vision behind the meeting is to use international trade and business diplomacy to “generate more opportunities for employment, increase earning potential, economic growth, alleviate poverty, and improve security.” According to Ramdin, “If we hope to improve the quality of life for citizens of both regions, we need to be practical and proactive. Central America and the Caribbean face similar challenges. If businesses succeed in these regions, it means a better standard of life for people.”

The first meeting of CEOs of both regions was held in El Salvador last year, and resulted in the strengthening of business partnerships and new investments. The Port of Spain meeting is expected to result in more strategic investments. The government of Guatemala has invited Assistant Secretary General Ramdin to host the next meeting in that country.

First cash-recycling ATM comes to the Caribbean

First cash-recycling ATM comes to the Caribbean
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Jamaica National Bank announced it has introduced the first cash-recycling ATM to the Caribbean with an installation in March at a JN Financial Services Center in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The bank quickly followed that deployment with another in Kingston.

The ATMs were purchased through Jamaican IAD Management Control Systems. Dianne Smith-Sears, general manager of MC Systems, said the cash recycling ATM will change the way the financial sector does business.

“In addition to the convenience of being able to withdraw cash at any time, the user will experience the same ease in making cash lodgements to their accounts. The machines will accept the notes directly … and will count and request verification of the total lodgement. The account balance is immediately updated and the amount made available for their use,” said Smith-Sears in a JN press release.

Eddy Carrioni, sales support and product marketing manager for Diebold, said MCS has “brought a worldwide trend into the Caribbean.” He presented MC Systems with an award from Diebold for being the first company to introduce the cash recycler.

Facebook Co-Founder “Could be barred from re-entering US” for dodging tax obligations of Facebook IPO

Facebook Co-Founder “Could be barred from re-entering US” for dodging tax obligations of Facebook IPO

By: Crawford Madison

US Immigration officials are making plans to bar Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin from entering the United States, after he reportedly renounced his United States Citizenship to dodge a huge tax bill from the highly anticipated Facebook IPO. US Immigration law provisions has rules regarding dumping his citizen to dodge US taxes. “There’s a specific provision of immigration law that says that a former citizen who officially renounces citizenship, and is determined to have renounced it for the purpose of avoiding taxation, is excludable,”

Facebook Co-Founder, Eduardo Saverin

Saverin, who was born in Brazil and educated at Harvard University and has recently moved to Singapore told the NY Times “This had nothing to do with taxes,”. “I was born in Brazil, I was an American citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.” The Facebook co-founder claims renouncing had nothing to do with his estimated 3 billion dollar stake in the social media company’s initial public offering. However, his renouncing his US citizenship could save him at least tens — if not hundreds — of millions of dollars. Although the provision of the law is rarely enforced, legal experts feel a high profile individual like Saverin could be hard to ignore. The alarm has sounded as two senators have already made moves to thwart Saverin and other tax dodgers.

Under the law, immigration experts say, his only likely option would be to apply for a temporary visa under a waiver — permanent residency and citizenship are essentially out of the question. But even visiting would require him to first admit he renounced his citizenship for tax purposes.

Cricket: Praises Pour In for West Indies Women

Cricket: Praises Pour In for West Indies Women
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

St John’s, Antigua – May 10, 2012 – The members of the victorious West Indies Women’s team have been lauded for their rapid growth and development, continued improvement, and recent success on the field of play.

Over the last two weeks, the West Indies Women demonstrated their strength with comprehensive victories over Sri Lanka Women to take the three-match One-Day International Series and five-match T20 International Series. The Windies won the One-Dayers 2-1 and took the T20 Series 3-1 with the final match ending in a no-result due to rain, earlier today.

In a message of congratulations to the team, President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dr Julian Hunte said it was heartening to see the way the players have developed as individuals and as a team since the women’s game was restructured and reorganised less than five years ago.

“The West Indies Women continue to demonstrate significant improvement and what we are seeing here is a reward on the investment made in the players. The WICB sees the development of players at all levels as integral to the present and future success of the game in the Caribbean,” Dr Hunte said.

“We are delighted with the performances of the West Indies Women’s team over the past few years as they continue to grow and mature. We have seen players blossom to reach the top of the world rankings. As a team, the West Indies have made significant strides up the ladder, and we expect that rise to continue.”

Dr Hunte added: “The team has really come a long way in a short space of time. Again, against Sri Lanka, they demonstrated their individual brilliance as well as team unity to overcome the challenges and bring joy to their supporters around the region. We believe we have a team that can become Number 1 in the world. We urge the girls to let this be their goal.”

Under the guidance of Head Coach Sherwin Campbell and the astute leadership Merissa Aguilleira; the West Indies have developed a team good enough to win their last four series.

They beat Pakistan at home last September; played unbeaten to win the International Cricket Council’s World Cup 2013 qualification tournament in Bangladesh last November; outplayed the higher ranked Indians at home earlier this year and have now stamped their authority against the Sri Lankans.

The West Indies boast the world’s best player in allrounder Stafanie Taylor. The 20-year-old Jamaica won the prestigious ICC Women’s Cricketer-of-the-Year award in 2011 and is the ranked Number 1 among batters and allrounders in the world.

Dr Hunte added: “Just a few short years ago we did not have a structured West Indies Women’s team. We at the WICB were aware that we had a number of talented young women in the Caribbean who deserved the opportunity to showcase their skills at the highest level and we made sure we put the systems in place to develop the game for the present and the future.”

Facebook Co-Founder “Could be barred from re-entering US” for dodging tax obligations of Facebook IPO

Haiti’s new PM: Mining laws being drafted
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) – Haiti’s new prime minister says his government is drafting legislation on a newly emerging mining industry to ensure the impoverished Caribbean nation reaps its fair share.

Laurent Lamothe says the legislation will be sent to Parliament soon. He says it will lay out rules apportioning royalties for the government and setting protections for the people and environment that could be affected by mines.

Laurent Lamothe

The plans for the legislation come after The Associated Press reported last week that two mining companies have begun drilling in Haiti’s northeastern mountains. They estimate that precious metals there are potentially worth $20 billion.

Mining laws in Haiti haven’t been revised since 1976.

“Standing Your Ground” Is the law based on race or circumstance??? PART I
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

May 11, 2012

By Crawford Madison

Unless you have been under a rock or smoking them, one has heard about the hotly contested Florida law that allows individuals with a concealed weapon permit to “stand their ground”. The controversial law by statute is defined as follows: “Stand-your-ground law states that a person may use force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of a threat, without an obligation to retreat first. “Stand your ground” governs U.S. federal case law in which right of self-defense is asserted against a charge of criminal homicide. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled in Beard v. U.S. (158 U.S. 550 (1895)), that a man who was “on his premises” when he came under attack and “…did not provoke the assault, and had at the time reasonable grounds to believe, and in good faith believed, that the deceased intended to take his life, or do him great bodily harm…was not obliged to retreat, nor to consider whether he could safely retreat, but was entitled to stand his ground.” Examine the facts and ask yourself why the law did not protect Marissa Alexander? Does a battered wife provoke an attack, or just a battered black women???.

In some cases, a person may use deadly force in public areas without a duty to retreat. Under these legal concepts, a person is justified in using deadly force in certain situations and the “stand your ground” law would be a defense or immunity to criminal charges and civil suit. The difference between immunity and a defense is that an immunity bars suit, charges, detention and arrest. A defense, such as an affirmative defense, permits a plaintiff or the state to seek civil damages or a criminal conviction but may offer mitigating circumstances that justifies the accused’s conduct.”

Marissa Alexander, 31

Marissa Alexander unsuccessfully applied the statute statue based on a Florida’s law to plead her case before Florida State Attorney Angela B Corey. The controversial “stand your ground” law failed to convince the jurors in her criminal case that the law applied specifically in her situation. Marissa, a 31 year old mother of three, and also allegedly a battered wife. A jury in March convicted her of aggravated assault after just 12 minutes of deliberation.

Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison, for firing a “warning shot” at her husband Rico Gray on August 1, 2010. Mrs. Alexander’s failed to invoke the “Stand Your Ground law” in her defense has presented an opportunity for the general public to decipher and pre-ponder if the statute is race specific, or unequivocally designed to protect any individual regardless of race, creed, or color. Allegedly Marissa’s husband beat her while she was pregnant. After yet another beating, Alexander fired a warning shot into the ceiling. Although that shot saved her life. Prosecutor Angela Corey did not take into account that Marissa Alexander: Had a court injunction against her crazed husband,in addition had Given Birth 9 Days Earlier, and was trained to use a weapon and possessed concealed weapons permit. Is the angry black woman an urban legend, or a overt tactic used to desecrate the image and character of women of color?

Will this case become a benchmark for the upcoming case of George Zimmwerman?

St. Kitt’s Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation, Fact or Fiction ???
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

February 12, 2012

According to the Government of St. Kitts & Nevis, an investment of $250,000 get you a passport. A passport goes for a $250,000 cash donation to the country’s Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation, which was set up to benefit retired sugar workers. “The Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis (also known as St. Kitts and Nevis) allows a person the opportunity to obtain citizenship trough its government sponsored investment program (“the Citizenship by Investment Program”). The Citizenship by Investment Program in St. Kitts and Nevis is the longest established economic citizenship program in the world having been established in 1984. The Citizenship by Investment Program is legitimate, well regulated and enjoys international approval and acceptance. Regulations for the Citizenship by Investment Program are provided for in the Citizenship Act and the Program is fully supported by the Sovereign Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Investors can also buy approved real estate worth at least $400,000. However, the retired sugar workers have no idea where the money goes. Former Minister of national security, justice, and legal affairs Dywer Astaphan was quoted in the Buenos Aires Herald challenging the “transparency” of the SIDF (Sugar Industry Diversification Program).

Manipulation of trust issues are apparent in the government’s intentions, and it is abundantly clear that the retired sugar workers receive nothing, nor have access to this fund. In addition, why would a “an independent charitable foundation” have a private registration? SIDF.org, The sugar program’s website, is registered to:
Henley and Partners Holdings LTD.

The Financial Services Regulatory Commission “FSRC” was established under the Financial Services Regulatory Commission Act, No. 22 of 2009 to regulate the non-bank financial sector. According to the FSRC, The FSRC is responsible for regulating/supervising the following entities:-

Insurance Companies (Domestic and Captive)
Private Pension Plans
Money Services Businesses
Credit Unions
Trust and Corporate Service Providers

The Sugar Industry Diversification Program should qualify as a Private Pension Plan, it is registered by a privately held company. Is the FSRC, regulating or supervising the SIDF???

Vybz Kartel

According to a recent story in The Jamaica Gleaner, Adidja Palmer, internationally known as Vybz Kartel has been implicated in five additional murders. Palmer was charged on September 29, 2011 by (“Jamaica’s Finest”) Jamaica’s Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT), incarcerated with no bail since October 3, 2011. Kartel was charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Days before Palmer was expected to appear in court to answer to drugs, murder and weapons charges in relation to the shooting death of 27-year-old promoter Barrington “Bossie” Burton, Kartel a/k/a the “World Boss” was charged with the murder of a second man, Clive “Lizard” Williams. Subsequently, a video surfaced of the alleged murder.

Although The Jamaican Gleaner reported that, Williams’ body has yet to be recovered, they have “graphic descriptions” of the murder. The body was said to be partially burnt and in the process of decomposition. Reportedly, a section of the premises of the crime scene was also burnt, or destroyed by fire. Assistant Police Commissioner Ealan Powell, told the Gleaner that Kartel is being further investigated “in connection with a number of murders, shootings and gunrunning”.

In April of this year, BBC News reported that Jamaica said it has had significant success in bringing down its murder rate, one of the highest in the world. Our question, How has the rate significantly decreased with an overtasked and undermanned police force? According to Nationmaster.com, and sources provided by the Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica currently has over 6,000 unsolved murders. Yet, crimes in Jamaica are on the decline? Further,

In addition, the increase of abuses of “extra-judicial killings and other abuses by security forces have increased”. In the case of Kartel, “while detectives are continuing their probe of Kartel and members and of his Portmore Empire Crew, the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force has now turned the searchlight on six policemen who have been implicated in a major security breach at the Gun Court Remand facility, where the entertainer is being held. The six officers have been transferred with immediate effect”. Such an incident should not be taken lightly, especially when videotaped evidence has surfaced of police committing such overt acts of accepting bribes for visitation rights.

Consequently, the police were not fired, just transferred.

One must ask if Kartel is being setup?

AJC on the New Greek Government
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2011

As the new Greek unity government was named, AJC expressed the hope that the leaders would successfully confront the major economic challenges facing the country.

AJC Executive Director David Harris:

“We are long-time friends of Greece, having visited the country countless times over the years to broaden and deepen our links with political leaders, civic representatives, and the Jewish community. Indeed, an AJC delegation was just in Athens and Thessaloniki last week to express solidarity with our friends and learn more about the current situation. We now wish Prime Minister Lucas Papademos every success in addressing the looming issues before him and his countrymen.

“We are, however, deeply concerned by the presence in the new unity government of the LAOS party, headed by Georgios Karatzaferis. According to reports, Karatzaferis has a record of outrageous statements about Jews, including, but not limited to, spreading the libel that Jews were implicated in the 9/11 attacks by their alleged absence from work that day, when nothing could have been further from the truth. We urge the new Greek leadership, understandably preoccupied with the economic crisis, not to permit any such expression of outright bigotry or anti-Semitism to emerge from its ranks.

“At this momentous time of transition for Greece, we wish to take the opportunity to voice our admiration and respect for George Papandreou, the outgoing Prime Minister. When he took office he faced a monumental task, which he sought to fulfill with courage and conviction. Moreover, in foreign policy, he forged a warm link with neighboring Israel, which has accrued to the mutual benefit of both countries. We thank him for his leadership and friendship, knowing that he will continue to play an active role in the life of his beloved country.”

Prime Minister Bruce Golding

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding recently stated that he would be stepping down and would not seek re-election. The masses have spoken and surprisingly the PM listened. Golding will step down as prime minister as soon as a new leader has been elected. According to a statement from Daryl Vaz, minister with responsibility for information, Golding conveyed this decision to the party’s central executive at it’s quarterly meeting. The pressure from Golding’s mishandling of the Manatt Affair has fueled speculation of the PM’s decision to step down. Could Golding set a precedent for the rest of the Caribbean’s political and fiscally inept Prime Ministers?

We applaud the efforts of Bruce Golding for paving the way for new leadership, fresh ideas, and for his ultimate sacrifice of putting country above self. Hopefully, other Prime Ministers are taking notes; because the world is watching. The Caribbean can only benefit from new ideas, talent, and leadership. It is time for the younger generation of leaders to take the reins and steer the Caribbean through these challenging times. Now is the time for many of our current leaders to pass the batons to the younger generation. Leadership is the key to promote the innovation and transformation of the Caribbean from dependents to independent economic powers.

The trumpet has sounded and the people have spoken, gone are the days of tolerating decades of broken promises and broken parties. The news of Golding’s stepping circled the globe and reverberated throughout the internet strengthening the voice of the people. Our current leaders have lost their way, Our leaders have lost faith in the powers of their people, Our leaders still find it difficult to see what is happening.

St. Kitts Prime Minister Denzil Douglas

Unemployment, poverty and crime are spiraling out of control. Our leaders still find it difficult to see what is happening. The hopes and dreams of the people of the region are fading fast, it is now time to take a stand and wrest the reins from the comfortable and reckless incumbents leaders. Or better yet, can we have a few more volunteers?

THE CARIBBEAN CANNOT LIVE BY TOURISM ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!! (PART I)

An address delivered by Dr. Emsley D. Tromp President of the Bank van de Nederlandse Antillen on the occasion of the 2007 TOG Partners’ Conference was held in Willemstad, Curacao, on July 3, 2007.

Dr. Emsley gave an overview of the “implicit weaknesses of Caribbean economies.” The vulnerabilities of the Caribbean in a globalizing economy were highlighted; in the address.”The Caribbean Market Place; Succeeding in a Globalizing World”, or the lack of participation in a globalizing economy.

Tourism is a means of economic development in the Caribbean. The industry brings in foreign currency, provides revenue for local governments and jobs for the people. On the surface, it seems that there are many advantages to tourism in the Caribbean. However there are many disadvantages, in which the negative impacts outweigh the benefits. Due to the lack of control over the influx of goods and people, the region experiences many disadvantages from the booming tourism industry. Further, the disadvantages of a tourism economy are linked to the global economy as a whole and are considerably worst than the disadvantages from a robust tourism industry.

Moreover, the contagion and threat of the European debt crisis and the potential negative impact on the U.S. economy will have an disastrous effect on Caribbean economies for years to come. Global markets continue to meltdown; due to the recessionary fears of a “double dip” global economic recession. Consumers apprehension toward spending and vacations also contribute to the harrowing effect on tourist dependent economies. According to the “Latest Tourism Statistics (2003-2011″), which outline Tourism Stop Over Arrivals, Tourist Arrival by Month, Tourist Arrivals by Main Market, and Cruise Passenger arrivals. The statistics identify a negative trend in the spending habits of tourists. Overall tourism arrivals have increased, especially in the sector of cruise travel. However, the relatively low levels of spending continues to adversely effect the economies of the region. Caribbean Tourism Performance Reviews & Prospects report increase in arrivals around the 5% level in 2011, and a paltry spending number of 3%. Statistics point to consumer tightening it’s purse strings and doing more bargin and discount hunting. In essence, causing a curtail in spending for tourists who stop over or arrive by the main market.

In 2007, tourism made up 15 percent of the gross domestic product in the Caribbean. However, the distribution of wealth to the islands is extremely low, often causing unevenness of placement of resources to the resorts. Foreign investors such as hotel owners and owners of communication and transportation systems intercept money from the industry before it reaches the people.

Indigenous people working outside the tourism industry experience a wage divide without access to foreign currency. Economic disadvantages of tourism in the Caribbean affect the social, political, and economic climate in a negative fashion. Lack of Revenue collection from inland revenues from foreign corporations, and investors weigh heavily on the natives. Drastic increases of taxes in the form of GCT, and the rising cost of consumer staples become the tax burden of the down trodden.
The growth of investment and construction start ups has slowed substantially, many governments look to accelerate construction projects with hopes of creating jobs. Economic contractions has prevented the development because high end projects come with the cost of government financing , which saddles the government with additional debts.

Dr. Tromp, also points out the pitfalls of an open economy vulnerable to systemic shocks of international development. For example, lack of support from the European Union, creation of NAFTA, and combating money laundering. Off shore banking havens in the Caribbean have absorbed the shock of revenue loss from fear of being “Black listed as Off shore Tax Havens”.

In 2010, France named 18 nations as being uncooperative tax havens and threatened to impose higher taxes on French companies that have operations in those jurisdictions. Anguilla, Belize, Grenada, Montserrat, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines were the other Caribbean countries on that blacklist. An article titled, “Are Offshore Tax Havens, the Scapegoats for Poor Government?” written in 2009 elaborates further on the concept. The author expressed the sentiments of “the negative criticism and lashing that governments of offshore jurisdictions have gotten as a result of this, offshore entities have assisted people tremendously in protecting their assets, improving the financial situation of themselves and businesses and finding new innovative ways of developing their businesses in new region.”

The author laments that “It is sad that offshore havens have been tied in with the war on drugs, money laundering and terrorism especially after September 11, which of course is a sad event in American history. But in various parts of the world, war is endemic and disease just seems to be a normal part of life while millions of children die from starvation, much of which goes unnoticed or receives only a mere fraction of the attention it deserves. Instead on the television we view pornography, crime and extreme wastage – and they are all normal as our children are being socialized into communities and cultures that have forgotten what is wrong from right, well… except where the government’s tax money is concerned.”

“There’s been so much hoopla surrounding the loss of federal revenue to offshore havens and the part that these bad governments who only suck the wealth of rich countries by granting favorable tax treatment to foreign companies and nationals of foreign countries who seek relief from the tax burdens they are oppressed with by their governments.”

In conclusion, it has become more and more apparent that countries should direct more of their resources to exploiting their natural resources; in order to create more subsistent economies and eventually to become less dependent on richer countries for trade and financial help. The Caribbean needs to wean itself from dependence of richer countries in one way or the other.

The Caribbean is one again trying to brace itself as it did before after 9/11. However, this is a different economic climate that we are facing. These are new world issues that will continue to exacerbate, if we stay the current course. By now it should be apparent that the Caribbean CANNOT LIVE BY TOURISM ALONE.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg And Girlfriend Priscilla Chan Update Status To ‘Married’ (PHOTOS)

By Sreeja VN

(AP Photo/Facebook, Allyson Magda Photography)

Fighting child sexual abuse in the Caribbean

Fighting child sexual abuse in the Caribbean

BY JOSEPH MCHEKADONA

All roads will lead to the Kijitonyama Post Office grounds tomorrow when reggae music fans will be marking the 7th Caribbean Beat Concert (famously known as Bob Marley Day).

Bob Marley

The organizer of the country’s most popular reggae music concert, Benji Cosmo, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that reggae enthusiasts should expect superb gigs from celebrated names such as Warriors Band from A-Town, Ras Inno & the Innocent People Band as well as Jhikoman and Afrikabisa Band among others.

The Arusha-based Warriors Band, which was recently crowned as this year’s Best Reggae Band at Tanzania’s Music Awards 2012, will give the main performance.

Combined with the awesome lyrics from Ras Inno & the Innocent People Band, Jhikoman and Afrikabisa as well as five artists from Kizazi Kipya Cha Reggae (the new reggae generation) in the names of Dabo, Susu Man, Jahson, Chibwa & Ras Six, the organizer is confident the show will leave lasting memories in the brain folds of reggae fans.

“The crowd should expect to see a reggae concert like never seen before in Tanzania. Four bands, five reggae artists and ragga dancers…a total of 55 Artists all in one backstage….they should expect massive performances from Tanzanian reggae legends and upcoming reggae artists,” he said
Christened Bob Marley Day 2012, the concert, which is also celebrated around the world, is in honor of the life of a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician who put reggae on the world map, Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley.

Sponsored by Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, PrimeTime Promotions, Cosmo Entertainment and Clouds FM’s Caribbean Beat, the night of the show will also see participants watching the finals of Champions League between Chelsea and Bayern Munich on big screens.

“We are doing everything possible to make this year’s, Bob Marley Day a special one to everyone who will be able to attend. With just an entrance fee of 5000/-, they will be able to watch the country’s best reggae performance between 8:00pm and 5:00am. We have arranged ample parking for more than 100 cars with over 40 security personnel inside and outside the venue. There will also be plenty of drinks and food,” said Cosmo.

Caribbean Beat is derived from a reggae show aired on Clouds FM every Sunday night from 10pm-midnight. “Tamasha La Caribbean Beat” was officially launched in 2006 as a platform and focus on building Tanzanian reggae talent by promoting artists through concerts and events.
This event is managed by Cosmo, a leading promoter of reggae music in Tanzania.

A Tanzanian artist who has made it commercially through such events is Amini who was first discovered performing on a Caribbean Beat stage.

Lloyd Brevett, founding member of The Skatalites, passes away aged 80

Lloyd Brevett, founding member of The Skatalites, passes away aged 80
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Lloyd Brevett, the Skatalites’ inimitable double bass player, has died following complications from a recent stroke.

As The Washington Post report, Brevett fell ill in March following the murder of his son in Kingston. Anyone lucky enough to have seen The Skatalites live will be able to testify to Brevett’s remarkable charisma. His on-stage presence – gnarled and formidable – was matched by his impressive bass playing. In the words of former Prime Minister (and one-time Skatalites tour manager) P.J. Patterson, “to say that Brevett was a creator of both ska and dub is not to use hyperbole”.

From 1963-5, The Skatalites established a reputation as one of Jamaica’s all-time great ska groups. Their LPs from the period include Ska Authentic and Ska Boo-Da-Ba, and their take on ‘The Guns Of Navarone’ – which would go on to become their signature tune – broached the UK Top 40. The group also worked with the likes of Desmond Dekker, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and an early version of The Wailers. They reassembled in the 1980s, and have toured intermittently ever since.

Windies legend urges Chanderpaul to move up

Windies legend urges Chanderpaul to move up
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara feels in-form Shivnarine Chanderpaul should bat at number three and is wasted down the order.
Chanderpaul has recently returned to the summit of the Test batting rankings after a superb series against Australia in the Caribbean.

The 37-year-old scored runs for fun against the Baggy Greens and remains as talented and productive as ever despite his advancing years.

The Guyana star has scored in excess of 10,000 Test runs at an average of more than 50 and his wicket will be the most coveted by the England attack over the next few weeks.

The Windies’ Achilles heel over the three Tests will probably be their top order, with the likes of Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards relatively inexperienced in the five-day game.

And with that in mind, Lara feels it would be prudent for coach Ottis Gibson to move Chanderpaul up from his current position at number five to the vital spot in the line-up at first wicket down.

Asked why Chanderpaul was batting so low, Lara replied: “It beats me. It is something that I’ve not talked in public about but I would want to know why.

“If he can be so consistent, why he wouldn’t say ‘let me bat with some more experienced or talented players up the order’? That’s not only going to benefit him but it would help the team.”

And the record-breaking left-hander insists that it is always best to have your top batsmen entering the fray when he can have a positive effect on proceedings.

“Your best batter is going to be at number three – he is going to lay the foundations to win a match,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “If your best batter is coming in five, repairing damage, I don’t understand the logic.”

Athletes came from all over the world including, USA, Canada, UK, Norway, France, Germany, and many of the Caribbean islands to compete for the nearly $20,000 in cash and prizes as well as bragging rights.

Alexandra Consten from Germany won the women’s Olympic distance triathlon, and Ancil Greene from Trinidad won the men’s race. Ancil was also named the Caribbean Champion for the men. Bermuda suffer loss ahead of Caribbean Championships
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Bermuda’s national rugby team warmed for their opening NACRA Caribbean Championship game with a 38-33 defeat to USA South in Florida at the weekend.

The Islanders, who take on Cayman Islands later this month, started strongly, pressuring the hosts deep into their own 22 metre area and almost took the lead through David Pringle who was held up just before the try line.
Lawrence Bird’s 23-man squad, which included several debutants, fell behind to a try and conversion but drew level almost immediately. Bermuda spoiled the USA South’s ball and managed to create the turnover with prop forward Jahan Cedenio barging past the opposition’s fly half before rounding the full back to score Bermuda’s first try, which was converted by Ian Henderson.

USA South were next on the scoreboard with another well-worked try but Bermuda were again quick to respond with a try from Bongani Ndlovu, which Shauntino Simons converted to give the scoreline parity.
Henderson added a penalty for Bermuda before USA South added to their score with another converted try.
Moments before the interval, Bermuda’s Andre Landy barrelled his way over the line with Simons adding a touchline conversion to leave the score 24-24 at half-time.
Both teams rung the changes during the break, which effected the flow of the game and the only try of the second period went USA South’s way.
The remainder of Bermuda’s points came from the boots of Henderson and Simons, who struck a 40-metre effort to draw the game level at 33-33.
However, with Bermuda’s Peter Dunkerley in the sin-bin, USA South crossed the line for the only try in the second half in the dying minutes.
Bermuda begin the defence of their Caribbean Championships title against Cayman Islands at the National Sports Centre on May 19.

The Island are scheduled to play four North Zone group games against Cayman and Bahamas; two home and two away. The three South Zone teams are Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad.
This year’s Championship winners will advance as the sole Caribbean representatives in the 2015 World Cup qualifiers to be held in England.
Bermuda, who are 49th in the International Rugby Board’s world rankings, are the top ranked side in the Caribbean.
n Fn Former Wales rugby captain Gwyn Jones is on the Island this week and will be regaling rugby enthusiasts with tales of tries, tours and what it feels like to listen to 70,000 hwyl-filled Welshmen roar you to victory.
Jones is the guest speaker at Renegades Rugby Club’s annual dinner on Saturday night at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dingy Club and as well as describing the highs of leading his nation, the former open-side flanker will touch on what it’s like to have it all snatched away in an instant.

Now a broadcaster with Welsh-language station S4C and the BBC, Jones was just 25 when he suffered an injury playing for Cardiff against Swansea in 1997 that left him paralysed for five days.
A compressed spine meant having to learn to walk again and ending his international career with 13 caps, just as it was getting started.
As well as entertaining the crowd, Jones will also be handing out the club’s annual awards which include several MVP categories.

BRENDON MCCULLUM RESTED, TOM LATHAM COMES BACK FOR ONE-DAY LEG OF WEST INDIES TOUR – CRICKET NEWS UPDATE

BRENDON MCCULLUM RESTED, TOM LATHAM COMES BACK FOR ONE-DAY LEG OF WEST INDIES TOUR – CRICKET NEWS UPDATE
EmailGoogle GmailStumbleUponFacebookShare

Opening batsman Brendon McCullum has been rested from New Zealand’s ODI and T20I squads as the Kiwi selectors announced separate squads for all the three formats for Kiwis’ next month’s tour of West Indies.

Brendon-McCullum

The NZC selection manager told the media reporters that McCullum has played a lot of cricket recently and it was decided to rest him for the initial part of the Caribbean itinerary, comprising two T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals.

“We have picked three strong squads for what will be a tough tour of the West Indies,” said Littlejohn while speaking to the media reporters after announcing the squads.

“We asked Brendon McCullum to take a break during the short-form component of the tour. The team is about to embark on a heavy program of international cricket and we will need to sensibly manage the workload of our players,” he added further.

The 30-year-old Otago born wicketkeeper batsman, who led the Black Caps for the major part of their home series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, with Ross Taylor battling a calf injury, is currently playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing fifth instalment of the cash-rich Indian Premier League. The league is due to end on May 27, if KKR makes it to the final, and just two weeks after the IPL concludes, the Kiwis will leave for West Indies tour.

In McCullum’s absence, BJ Watling, who has completely recovered from the hip injury, will keep wickets in five ODIs and two T20 Internationals against Windies.

After being overlooked for the home series against Proteas, the left-handed Canterbury batsman, Tom Latham has been recalled into the side, for both the ODIs and T20s. Littlejohn said that the tour provides the rookie batsman an opportunity to cement his place in the national side.

“Tom Latham comes back into the short-form teams after showing a great deal of promise during his first series against Zimbabwe,” Littlejohn said. “This tour presents an opportunity for Tom to build on the good start he has made to his international career,” he added further.

The 20-year-old lower-order batsman debuted in February earlier this year and has so far played in only three One Day Internationals.

All-rounder Jacob Oram has also recovered from calf injury and has been included in both the ODI and T20 squads.

New Zealand will play two T20 Internationals on June 30 and July 1 at Lauderhill, before playing the five ODI series between July 5 and July 16.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Usain Bolt won the 100 meters in 9.82 seconds in the Jamaica International Invitational on Saturday night, a month before the sprinting powerhouse’s Olympic trials.

The crowd cheered wildly when Bolt won in his first 100 of the year, giving him a standing ovation after the race that had two false starts. The time was the fastest in the world this year.

“It’s always a joy,” Bolt said. “I was very happy to come here and see all the people who came out.”

The crowd included the Caribbean country’s prime minister, Portia Simpson Miller.

Even before the race, the confident Bolt got the hometown crowd going with a quick “To Di World” pose, in which he points to the sky as if he’s about to shoot an arrow into the sky.

In the Beijing Olympics four years ago, Bolt won gold medals and set world records in the 100 and 200 and helped Jamaica win and set a world record in 400 relay.

Jamaica’s Michael Frater was second in 10.00.

American Carmelita Jeter won the women’s 100 in 10.81, the best time in the world this season.

American Bershawn Jackson won the 400 hurdles in 48.73 seconds, and Ben Bruce dominated the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in 8:34.17 to beat fellow American Donnie Cowart.

PORT-AU-PRINCE – A new Haitian government lead by Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe officially began its duties Wednesday, capping a months-long political vacuum in the troubled nation.

President Michel Martelly, in office for a year, had lacked a cabinet chief since Garry Connille resigned a February.
Lamothe, 39, says he is basing his government policies on fighting extreme poverty and protecting the environment.
“I am asking the government team to get to work immediately in order to satisfy the population and improve its living conditions,” he said.

Immediately after the inauguration, Lamothe and Martelly led the first cabinet meeting held at the presidential palace destroyed in a devastating January 2010 earthquake.
“Each ministry must have a website and a constant presence on social networks in order to lead transparently and to inform the population of decisions,” said the prime minister, rarely seen without a tablet computer.
“All of my cabinet ministers will share information via Twitter, Facebook and the Internet,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

There are 22 ministers, including seven women, sitting on the new cabinet.
Lamothe received a political science degree from Barry University in Miami and earned an MBA at St Thomas University in Florida. Known as a keen sportsman, he played tennis for Haiti in the Davis Cup.
He became foreign minister in Martelly’s government in October.

The Martelly administration is trying to ramp up stalled reconstruction efforts following the 2010 earthquake that flattened large parts of Port-au-Prince and damaged much of the south of the country.
The magnitude 7.0 quake killed 250,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands in a nation that was already the poorest country in the Americas. According to UN figures, the quake killed, injured or displaced one in six of the Caribbean nation’s entire population of almost 10 million.AFP

Facebook is set to go public with almost a billion users, nearly $4 billion in annual revenue and a popular brand name. The shares of the social media behemoth are said to be priced between $34-$36 per share. A Fidelity spokesman said the demand for shares of Facebook is very high. Fidelity has an exclusive retail distribution agreement with Deutsche Bank Securities, an underwriter in the Facebook deal. However many are preparing to dump shares of Facebook, enture capital firm Accel Partners, which is the largest shareholder outside of Zuckerberg, is selling 49 million shares in the offering. That’s about a quarter of its Facebook holdings.

Is Facebook Overpriced?

At $35 a share, Facebook would be valued at 70 times its projected 2012 earnings of 50 cents a share, and 18 times its estimated revenue of $5 billion. By comparison, Google trades at $610 a share, but trades at less than 15 times its 2012 profit estimate and six times its revenue.

How can I get some shares?

Those “regular” investors will get access to Facebook shares the morning after the price is set, when the stock begins publicly trading on the tech-heavy Nasdaq exchange. That’s currently slated to happen Friday.

Online PR News – 16-May-2012 –Orlando, FL — Dancehall Queen, Patra (aka. Dorothy Smith) has announced the release of her new single, ‘Come Ova’, scheduled to be released on June 12th, 2012 through a new partnership. The new project will be launched in collaboration with LGN Entertainment, Veal-Steen Music Publishing’s parent company, and Patra’s label, +Plus Entertainment. Distribution of releases under the new partnership will be taken care of by INgrooves/Fontana, the largest U.S. indie distributor. A new album, Patra’s first since 2007, will be launched by the venture later this summer.

I’m a sex symbol and I am ready to give a show. I am back with a new mature edge. It is not about going on stage and spitting lyrics. 2012 will see the return of the ‘Queen’ in full force,”

“I’m very excited to partner with Patra, the artist and the CEO of +Plus Entertainment” stated Steve Lane, the CEO of Veal-Steen Music Publishing and LGN Entertainment. “This partnership was a great match for LGN Entertainment. Since we have the distribution, radio, and marketing already in place, it puts us in a position to offer these services to a talent like Patra. Our goal now is to help her reconnect with her fans and simultaneously introduce her music to a new audience.”

Short for “Cleopatra”, Patra has been the “Queen of the Pack” since day one. With 5 singles in the U.S. top 100 R&B charts (highest placement #20), her prominent reputation was set 2 albums into her career. Having taken several years off since her last release “Where I’ve Been” (2005), Patra is now ready to sit upon her throne once again and woo the masses with her sensual style and captivating voice. While still working on her upcoming project titled ”Patra, the Continuation,” her first leak song “Bad inna Bed,” was unleashed by Sway (of MTV) on his SiriusXM radio show. The hypnotic baseline and catchy hook have drawn the attention of both new fans and loyal followers, preparing the masses for her next coming.
After establishing herself in Jamaica as an artist, Patra’s debut album “Queen of the Pack” immediately hit the US R&B charts with her first single Think (About It), which reached as high as the 89th spot. She picked up early momentum as a featured singer on the Shabba Ranks song, Family Affair, which hit #84 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later on that year, Patra hit the charts with her follow-up single, Worker Man, off her debut album “Queen of the Pack.” The next two years, she blazed the charts hitting the Billboard Hot 100 three times with her hits Romantic Call (reaching #55), Pull Up to the Bumper (reaching #60), and Scent of Attraction (reaching #89).
When asked about her long hiatus from the music business, Patra states, “it was important for me to take some time away from the spotlight for a while. Success came at me at a fairly young age, so I decided to take the time to work on my personal development, consider my career moves carefully and learn more about the business side of things. This is why it is important for me now to have a solid team in place; one that cares about the artists and their work. It also explains why I am so excited about this partnership because now l can look forward to getting back to doing what I have always done!”

Patra is letting the world know that she still carries herself with the stern elegance of a queen, but can put it down when needed! Working hard and getting ready to attack 2012 like it owes her something, Patra is looking to once again regain her spot as one of the industry’s top artists.
